Club News

Volunteer of the WeekEleanor Edward - Eleanor joined the club back in May, and has quickly become one of our Queen Fletching Bees. She really loves fletching arrows. She’s even taught others how to do it. On ya Eleanor, keep it up. We love ya, & your work! ♕➸🪶🐝

• 💧Water💧- Still no drinkable water at the club house. And our cold water machine at the shipping containers is temporarily out waiting for a new filter. Kristy is on it! 🚰

• Congrats to 🏅Jack Catchpoole (again) for winning the October Monthly Medal. Comisserations to: 🥈James, 🥉Brian, & 🕷Bron.

• That was the last monthly medal for 2025, so our monthly medal winners (Brian, Kate, Jack, Lionel, Sandy, & Sarah) can battle it out for the most improved at the Graeme Jeffrey Memorial Tournament for the Club Champion title & various prizes.

• We need some backup people to open & close the club during the week, see the TBA’s below. Bernd will be away ✈, and David may be unavailable ⚖, so alternates would be great! 🙏🙏

• Please welcome our newest, fully approved club members: 👏👏👏

(Open) Ben Herbert, Geoffrey Tulett, & (50+) Alison Dayman

Club Records

Congrats to our new club (& potential SQAS (state)) record holders, from the Monthly shoot:

◦ Izach Parr - U16->U21 Male Barebow - WABB 50/720 - 430 (359) 👏🤯💣

◦ Jack Catchpoole - U18 & U21 Male Recurve - AA 30/720 - 540 👏

Etiquette

Talking & making noise on the shooting line is frowned upon, especially during competitions. While it is common for archers shooting socially to talk on & off the shooting line, it is a luxury, not a privilege. Please be mindful of other archers who may be put off by the noise or the conversation topics.

  • If someone is making noise while you’re trying to shoot; Just ask them to stop.

  • If that makes you feel uncomfortable or they don’t stop; Speak to a DOS/Judge.

  • If someone asks you to be quiet while they shoot; Please respect their wishes.

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Believe it or not! An accident years ago left Kate Hall with a diminished sense of taste. This might explain why she prefers Barebow & laughs at David’s jokes.

Tip of the Week.

👶 Newbies & Archery Gear 🏹

Finished a Come & Try or Beginners Course, and joined the club? Want to get your own gear? Unfortunately, there is no simple single recipe to follow. However, we have a guide for beginners on gear purchases & choices. It’s too long to list here.

For most beginners, we recommend using hire gear for a few months. See the guide for why. For new archers that just know that this is the sport for them, then by all means buy your own good gear from the start. Just know that you will outgrow & replace some of it really quickly. Again, that’s all listed in the guide.

Safety Tip

✋ Talk to the hand, not to the DOS! 🙊

Being honest, the job of the DOS isn’t an exciting one. Looking out all the time for kangaroos, wayward archers, & the occasional high-draw on the shooting line isn’t as entertaining as Netflix. Often the intellectual highlight is remembering how many whistle beeps to make this time. We love it when someone comes over to talk to us or to ask a question; it helps break the monotony. Despite that, the safest thing is to NOT talk to the DOS at all while they are on duty, unless it is related to their current task. Exceptions are things like “Is it okay if I take a target out to XYZ distance in this lane?”.

Anytime you talk to a DOS, you’re distracting them from their important safety task. There really is no good time to have a yarn with them while on duty, however if you have to talk to them, immediately after they have given the three (3) beeps to signal “Verily thou art safe to sally forth & collect thyne pointy sticks!” is the best time.
