Etiquette
The Come & Try (C&T) classes at the club take priority over the archery field. This is to enable them to shoot as needed & safely, and to suit the instructors & course presentation. We open the field on those mornings to our members with those pre-conditions in mind. e.g. Youth Squad & Coaching etc. General archery is typically permitted after 11am when a C&T is on, as by then we have typically got the students up to the point of shooting normal length ends by then.
What this means practically to our members is, when you see the C&T’s shooting line thinning out or finishing, please stop shooting. The C&T DoS may signal you to stop shooting when the C&T class has finished shooting. Please also limit the time looking for lost arrows during the class, so we can resume shooting for the class faster.
“Alternative” Archery Facts
People think Archery is a hobby or sport. It’s not. It’s a post-apocalypse survival skill! 🏹 🧟
Tip of the Week
🫠 Stick to the Point ➤
When you cut your arrow shafts or remove an arrow point, before you glue in your new points, it’s important to clean the inside of your arrow shafts. Typically with a pipe cleaner or a cotton-bud dipped in some solvent. e.g. (In preferred order) Isopropyl Alcohol, or Methylated Spirits, or Acetone. Insert the wet cotton-bud in the shaft as high as possible. You’ll see just how much dust & debris is generated from the cutting process. If that isn’t removed, the hotmelt glue used to attach the arrow nock or pin will not get a good bond. This often results in the arrow point separating from the shaft, and getting lost in the target butt.
Note: Only use each end of the cotton-bud once; to avoid possible recontamination.
It’s also a good idea to clean & heat the arrow point/pin nock prior to applying the melted glue. This stops the glue from prematurely setting before insertion. Apply an even thin film to all of the metal that is inserted. When you insert the point & pin, twist it as it is inserted into the shaft, this helps ensure a good even coat inside the shaft. Once fully inserted, press down using the shaft until the glue cools to solid. At which point, you can remove the squeezed out glue using your thumbnail. Always remove the glue going from shaft to point/nock. If there was no squeeze out, you didn’t use enough glue. Don’t skimp.

Safety Tip
🎯🏹 Director of Shooting (DOS) 🦘🔔
You know them as “The person with the whistle”, or “Chief Skippy Chaser”. However this job requires more than being able to occasionally count to three (3) and herding kangaroos.
The first step to becoming a DOS at our club is to complete the free self-paced online Club Official training course provided by Archery Australia. Completing this course not only earns you a nice certificate, it improves your archery knowledge, & most importantly helps keep yourself & fellow archers safe. Thus it is open to, available to, and recommended to all of our archers.
