Club News

• Lanes 23 to 25 have been air-conditioned just in time for Summer.😓 No; We are not that rich a club; it’s a just very fine cooling-mist system that has been installed under the shade structure. It was installed & tested out today with the temperature hitting 35℃+. Many thumbs up were given. Kristy has even made a reservation for Lane 23 Shooting position C. You can fight her for it! We will look at extending the coverage as the trial only took 60 seconds after turning on to get approval. Thankfully the mist is fine enough to not cause an issue with equipment. 🚰🚿🌈🧊

• Whilst there is no Monthly Medal for November; Saturday’s Monthly competition’s Closest To The Spider came down to a one-arrow shoot off after a tie was declared. James Holland took the 🕷!

Reminder: RSVP by email to in...@centenaryarchers.org.au to give us a guide for catering purposes for Saturday’s party. The day is completely free for members and family; but only members can shoot arrows still. 🎄📮🗳

• Please welcome our newest, fully approved club member: (50+) Lillian Teng 👏

Etiquette

The water cooler doesn’t magically fill itself. If you notice it getting low-ish, please top it up using the big bottle of water next to it. On a very hot day, we can easily empty it twice.

If you’re getting a cold drink of water from it, please pay it forward by filling it up so the next few people can too!

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Forecast for December: The Archery Gods™ will favour archers who make donations or sacrifices of Ice Cream. The ground will harden, & your arrows will now prefer to do less work, and will all try to hide under the long grass. The sunscreen & sweat gods will conspire to make your grip slippery and your eyes extra stingy. Despite ordering that new piece of archery equipment in time for Xmas, it will only arrive in the new year. Probably in March … maybe.

Tip of the Week.

🏷👀 Read label for details 🏷👀

We’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth repeating. Having at least your initials on your arrow shafts is required for every competition. Coloured marker pens work, but will fade or wear off over time. A lot of serious archers will get custom arrow wraps made up with their name on them. That can get costly, and it’s not easy to retrofit on to pre-made or existing arrows. An alternative is to get pre-printed sticky labels (200 for <$3) added to your arrows. They look very professional, legible, & you will have plenty left over for future arrows. Plus you can put them on other things too. They handle the weather conditions very well, so when your lost arrow is found, there is a good chance it can still be identified.

Bonus Tip: If you can fit it on, add a mobile phone number so someone can easily let you know when it’s found.

Safety Tip

🔥😰 Heatstroke 🧊😳

With summer comes one of the more dangerous aliment Australian archers commonly face. It can strike when you least expect it. It doesn’t have to be the hottest day on record; you might have been fine last weekend when it was 3-5℃ hotter, but the situation could be slightly different this weekend. Contrary to popular thought, drinking cold drinks/water on hot days does not help. In fact it makes it far far worse. Ask me how I know! - David.

Symptoms: rapid pulse & fast, shallow breathing; trouble speaking, slurred speech; problems concentrating or coordinating movements; aggressive or strange behaviour; dizziness, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness; sudden rise in body temperature; hot and dry and possibly red skin, possibly with no sweat; dry, swollen tongue; headache, nausea or vomiting; intense thirst.

First Aid: Tell someone early if you have some of those symptoms. Get in the shade. Sit or lay down. Remove excess clothing. Small sips of cool (not cold) water. Sponging with water & fan the damp skin. Placing cold packs under their armpits or groin, or on the back of their neck. Call for/get medical attention. Under no circumstances do they drive themselves home.

Prevention: Drink plenty of water – even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid hot or sugary drinks; Keep cool – try to avoid direct sun. Wear a hat and lightweight, loose-fitting, cotton clothing. If it’s just too hot or humid, consider giving Archery a miss that day. No experienced archer will think less of you for saying “It’s too hot, I’d rather not.”
