Etiquette

The Come & Try (CnT) classes at the club take priority over the archery field. This is to enable them to shoot as needed & safely, and to suit the instructors & course presentation. We open the field on those mornings to our members with those pre-conditions in mind. e.g. Youth Squad & Coaching etc. General archery is typically permitted after 11am when a CnT is on, as by then we have typically got the students up to the point of shooting normal length ends by then.

What this means practically to our members is, when you see the CnT’s shooting line thinning out or finishing, please stop shooting. The CnT DoS may signal you to stop shooting when the CnT class has finished shooting. Please also limit the time looking for lost arrows during the class, so we can resume shooting for the class faster.

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Archerocide noun (Australia)

When a DOS, deliberately or accidentally, or maliciously, allows shooting to commence while archers are still retrieving arrows.

Tip of the Week.

↝ Don’t get too bent out of shape ↝

Have you bent or wrinkled one of your plastic arrow vanes/fletches? The fix is really easy.

Plastic vanes/fletches are typically made from TPU. This stuff is fairly amazing. It can take a whole lot of wear and tear. It also has another trick up its sleeve, which is it remembers what shape it was moulded into. If you apply some low heat (think: steam, a hairdryer on low, or boiling water) it will try to go back to its original shape. With a little more help it will go back to being straight. Don’t try this trick with real feathers or spin-wings though.

Safety Tip

➶➳ Check your arrows ➷⇏

Never shoot a damaged arrow! Separate it until it has been suitably repaired. It can be incredibly dangerous to you & your fellow archers.

• Before every archery session, check your arrows (and other equipment) for any damage.

• When walking back from collecting your arrows is the ideal time to quickly check your arrows. Has a nock been struck or come loose?; Has a point come partially out or been left in the target? Has a fletch torn or come off? It’s best to discover this before the start of the next end.

• If an arrow has struck something other than the soft part of the target butt, give the arrow a thorough inspection. When this happens it is quite common for nocks to crack or come off; points to partially or fully come out; Or worst of all, the arrow to be bent, cracked, or split. In addition to visual & tactile inspection, give any carbon shaft a good flex, then rotate the shaft 90°, and flex again! This can help expose mid-shaft damage.

If you’re unsure what to look for, ask an experienced archer, instructor, or coach.
