Club News

AA membership renewal notices seem to be broken with the new system (Assemble). If you’ve got a AA card, please check it as your membership may have expired and not realise it. 🪪

• In future, before our End of Month club comps, we will be closing the Archery fields for a short break at 12pm (noon) so we can set up the targets and equipment needed for the competition. 🚧

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Forecast for May: The Archery Gods™ will turn a blind eye to left-handed archers, whatever that means. Despite the public holiday, you still won’t shoot enough arrows as you should. Your last arrow shot would have Robin Hood’ed one of your other arrows except for that pesky butterfly in the Brazilian Rainforest. In a parallel universe, your best archery-self will score a perfect round.

Tip of the Week

🔍👀 The Metal Detector 🔉🔊

Losing an arrow is easy to do. Finding them, not so much. Especially with longer grass. For this reason, the club has a metal detector located just inside the target shed, on the left wall. It goes by many names: The Minesweeper, The Wand of Shame, The +5 Wand of Recovery, etc. Don’t waste time & effort just visually looking for an arrow after the end in which it was lost. Go directly to the metal detector. For optimal usage:

Ensure all the dials & switches are set to their respective “gold” location marks.

The “loop” is parallel to & as close as possible to the ground as you swing it.

The cable is snuggly plugged in all the way into the control box.

Test it detects one of your arrows before proceeding.

Take small steps (~20cm) and complete a wide swing arc per step.

Turn it off between ends. Setting the Sensitivity knob to its lowest setting turns it off.

Ask a barebow archer for help. They have lots of experience with losing & finding arrows.

Safety Tip

➶➳ Check your arrows ➷⇏

Never shoot a damaged arrow! Separate it until it has been suitably repaired. It can be incredibly dangerous to you & your fellow archers.

Before every archery session, check your arrows (and other equipment) for any damage.

When walking back from collecting your arrows is the ideal time to quickly check your arrows. Has a nock been struck or come loose?; Has a point come partially out or been left in the target? Has a fletch torn or come off? It’s best to discover this before the start of the next end.

If an arrow has struck something other than the soft part of the target butt, give the arrow a thorough inspection. When this happens it is quite common for nocks to crack or come off; points to partially or fully come out; Or worst of all, the arrow to be bent, cracked, or split. In addition to visual & tactile inspection, give any carbon shaft a good flex, then rotate the shaft 90°, and flex again! This can help expose mid-shaft damage.

If you’re unsure what to look for, ask an experienced archer, instructor, or coach.
