Club News

• Volunteer of the Week:Ā  Bernd Martini. He is taking a well earned break in NZ as an equipment manager & spare-time father to the stars (see below). Usually he’s opening & closing the club every Monday & Thursday afternoons, keeping the canteen in supply, opening the club every other afternoon to satisfy the archery demands of his daughters. He’s also on the club’s committee, organises club appearances at fetes etc, attends SQAS meetings, in training to be a National Judge, DOS, handy-man, etc etc etc. If you’re very quiet & patient, and if he doesn’t see his own shadow; You might get to see him shoot some arrows! On ya Bernd! We love ya! Thanks! šŸ’—šŸ‘šŸ‘

Tip of the Week.

🌬 Shooting the Breeze šŸ’Ø

One of the weather conditions that archers must prevail against is wind. For those with sights, you have the option of adjusting your windage setting if the wind is blowing across the field. I.e. The left to right adjustment. When the wind is coming toward you, adjust your sights lower, thus raising your bow slightly. The opposite if the wind is coming from behind. For the non-sighted bows, you have to aim off from the target (or your blade of grass or koala) accordingly. That’s for a fairly constant wind. Alas, wind rarely is, it’s often gusty.

For gusty conditions, your best option is to try to anticipate the gusts, and be quick to shoot when there is none. Remember, you have on average 40 seconds to complete each shot. That’s 4 minutes (240 seconds) per end. You’ve got a lot of time, so use it to your advantage. No one makes you have to shoot during a gust. Find those gaps.

While some archers get panicky and flustered during windy conditions, remember there is nothing you can do to change it, and every other archer is being similarly affected. Thus there really is nothing to be concerned about.

In really bad circumstances, officials may decide to pause or cancel shooting. The wind speeds required for this are extremely high, what typically causes stoppages before reaching those speeds is when there are safety concerns. E.g. Arrows constantly being blown off the rests, scope tripods blowing over, archers losing balance, targets moving etc.

This is yet another reminder that you should always peg down your target. If you use a tripod, consider how you can secure it down. Bows on some stands can even blow over too.

Safety Tip

šŸŽÆ Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  ā†™šŸ‘Ø What a let down! šŸ‘©ā†˜ Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  šŸŽÆ

Did you know you don’t have to shoot every time you nock an arrow, raise & pull back your bow? Occasionally as archers, we need to not shoot an arrow. I know, it seems impossible to do at times. The safest way to not release an arrow whilst at full draw, is to lower your bow arm, so the arrow is pointing at the ground. Then gradually let the string go forward, while still maintaining the drawing hand position on the string. Doing it this way means the arrow can’t go anywhere unexpected if your hand slips during the let down process. Practise this a few times so you feel comfortable.

Remember, you may have to emergency stop due to a field safety issue, pointing the bow down is the quickest & safest way to ensure an accidental release doesn’t cause a serious issue.
