Club News
⢠šVolunteers of the Weekš All of our Worker-Bees! šCollectively, we did a huge amount of stuff at the club. 16 new cores were installed in the round target butts. 7 new cores were installed in the square ones. 35 new Target Number signs were made. Most, if not all, the distance paver markers were raised to level with the rest of the ground, sink-holes were filled, gutters cleaned, ruts in the driveway & carpark were repaired, & dozens of club arrows were repaired. Oh! Elle, Sanne, & Jane will hunt down anyone who messes up the workshop shedās tidy up. You have been warned! Thanks everyone, it was a great team effort!šx šÆ
⢠New signs - You might notice some new signs at the club recently. Due to some non-member issues, some No-Smoking signs have been installed. Also two signs about āHigh Drawsā from Archery Queensland have been installed as well. šš¹
⢠New bows - We have added 5 brand new right-handed recurve bows to our Come & Try / Hire equipment. Another red 20lbs bow, and 4 white 22lbs bows. This is to help with Come & Try demand & the desire for some new archers to have a higher poundage stepping stone available before they buy their own bows. Thanks to the members who helped build & set up these bows.š¹
⢠The AA Open Field Championships results are in. Our girls did fantastically well! Ellen Martini (š„Recurve) & Liezel Roux (š„Compound). Ellen even competed in the Menās team event! How good .. ney, great, are our archers. They have both (& Parents & Coaches) have put a huge amount in to get these results. Well done!
⢠Please welcome our newest, fully approved club members: ššĀ
(60+) Jamie Lyle, & Neil Christie
Etiquette
When calling (scoring) arrow values, the convention is to start with the archerās highest scoring arrow, working your way down in order, to their lowest scoring arrow.
When scoring for a group of archers, we score left to right. I.e. Leftmost archer first.
āAlternativeā Archery FactsĀ
The politically correct term for an Olympic Recurve archer is, āLegendā.

Tip of the Week
š Donāt overbow! š
Overbowing is when a bow has a drawing weight too great for an archer.
This commonly happens with new archers, but intermediate and advanced archers also can fall foul of this. Itās not just a āmanā thing either. There are many influencing factors leading an archer to desire & use heavier (draw weight) bows. E.g. The desire to shoot longer distances; To be like the more advanced archers; etc. This is often not true & a false image. Not sure if youāre overbowed? Feel free to ask our coach or instructors.
A heavier bow will allow you to have a faster arrow speed, and hence shoot flatter & be less affected by wind. Yes, that is desirable. It will technically allow you to shoot further too, much much further than you will ever need to shoot in target archery. A low poundage beginners bow can still hit gold on a target face at 70m. Donāt believe us? Wait till the Xmas clout competition. They can reach 100m+, easy-peasy!
However, what a heavier bow can also do is:
Cause you serious wrist, arm, shoulder, & muscle problems and injuries.Ā
Cause you to fatigue too quickly and possibly misfire.
Give you very bad archery habits that can take years to unlearn.
Make it more difficult to aim by being less steady at full draw.
Make it very difficult to learn or correct basic archery forms & problems.
Make you enjoy archery less, and shoot less.
This is why we strongly urge new archers to start with low poundage bows & limbs; To very slowly progress up in bow weight, and in small increments. Shooting a higher poundage bow doesnāt make you a better target archer. You need to be a better archer first, then have archery specific fitness & muscle strength, developed over time, before you can even take advantage of a heavier bow. Even then there are limits.
The TL;DR is, donāt be macho! Donāt race towards high poundages. Eg. 35-40+. Believe us, there really is little need. It is not a panacea. A bow in the mid-20s to mid-30s range will let an adult successfully compete in every activity Archery Australia offers.
Safety Tip
š»š¹šŗ Intoxicated Toxophilites š·šøš
Under no circumstances may any archer participate at the club in any archery sporting or recreational activity (participation, competition, officiating, training, practising, coaching, instructing, teaching or being coached or instructed or trained etc) while under the adverse influence of drugs, including alcohol. Archery Australia rules require a zero blood alcohol level for participation.
