Club New

• Brisbane City Council have informed us that they will be doing Fire Ant treatment via drones at the club this Monday. Per their request/sign, the club/park is CLOSED this Monday. 🔥🐜

• Sunday saw the club hosting an unofficial Youth Development Day for the SQAS kids, especially the ones heading down to Tasmania at Easter to compete in the National Youth Archery Championships. Thanks to Jarryd, Rob, & Lindsay for organising it & running it. 📣👏

OMG! The culvert as you enter the club has finally been cleared, not by Council, but by our local Firies. Thanks Don for organising this! Hopefully the driveway & carpark area will stop eroding. 🚒

Reminder: If you’ve signed up for the OzBow program ($30), it’s a once-off fee. You don’t need to keep paying it every time you do it. The fee covers all the medals, stickers, a certificate, & a water bottle too. We’ve had a number of people over the years pay multiple times. You don’t need to.🪢

Etiquette

Please don’t hold up the entire shooting line looking for a lost arrow. It’s easy to get absorbed in the search and lose track of time. You should only search for a maximum of a couple of minutes each end. In short, you can keep searching until the last archer has finished scoring, and has pulled their arrows from the target. That’s when you need to stop searching, and try again at the next end.

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Education is important but Archery is more importanter.

Tip of the Week.

🏹 Finger Tab Maintenance 🖐

Is the leather on your finger tab all curled up?

  • Wet the leather a little and use a hot Clothes Iron with a tea-towel between the leather and the iron. When pressed, the heat and moisture will help set the leather straight again. Don’t press long. Very short presses are best.

  • When you put your tab away after shooting, try to do so in a way as to keep the leather flat or curled the other way. Store it somewhere it dries properly.

  • Some brands/models of finger tabs have spare leathers that can be purchased.

Have you checked your tab for missing or loose screws?

  • The screws that hold the tab together often vibrate loose. Use a drop of loctite/thread-locker/nail-polish on them to stop them vibrating out. Otherwise tighten them occasionally.

  • The club does have a small supply of replacement screws for common tabs.

Is the leather not as smooth/supple/slippery as it once was?

  • Apply a small amount of talcum powder to the leather. It will make it soft to touch and slippery for the string. It will only last for about one archery session.

  • Try using some fine-grained sandpaper to smooth the leather where it is rough.

Safety Tip

🏃💨 No running 🏃💨

As a child, you were told & learnt to never run with scissors; Arrows are just as bad. So don’t. Unlike scissors, arrows also like to embed themselves in targets at face height, and love pointing out of the ground at optimal angles for injury. That’s all before we get to tripping hazards etc. The sport of Target Archery is not a race, there is no need to run, jog, or even power walk. The DOS will always wait for you to get behind the line safely.

To quote a very experienced SQAS archer: “Take your time; Be quick about it!”.
