Club News

• 🏆 Congratulations to our new 2025 Club Champion, Jack Catchpoole! Jack was head & shoulders the most improved at the Graeme Jeffrey Memorial Tournament (photos), beating out Ryan🥈 & Brian🥉. Bronwyn secured the unique 2025 Closest to the Spider badge & plushie.🕷

• We need some backup people to open & close the club during the week, see the TBA’s below. Bernd will be away ✈ so alternates would be great! 🙏

• 🙏 We still need plenty of volunteers to help with the inflatable archery range at Sherwood. If you can spare an hour or two, that would be great. Sign up & earn a ground fee credit! 🌳🏹🌳

Etiquette

Please keep your gear & possessions within your shooting lane allotment. Move it with you if & when you change lanes/targets. We commonly think that space is a limited resource only on the shooting line. It’s an issue behind the waiting line as well. If you have lots of stuff, consider putting some of it up against the containers, or against the wall under the covered area. When a lane overflows it can have a knock-on effect impacting a lot of your fellow archers.

If there is someone else’s gear in your lane, politely ask whose it is, and if they can move it. I haven’t yet met an archer who wouldn’t eagerly comply with that request.

“Alternative” Archery Facts

What do different archers immediately think when they’ve shot an arrow …

Compound: Curses! It wasn’t an X.

  Recurve: Yay, it’s a gold!

Barebow: Wow, it’s almost a group!

Longbow: I wonder what colour it will be when it eventually gets there.

Tip of the Week.

🏹 What’s in your archery bag? 🛄

Barebow edition

A Barebow recurve archer’s “go!” bag should typically at least contain:

  • Riser, limbs, & bow string.

  • Quiver & 8+ arrows.

  • Collapsible bow stand.

  • Armguard & Finger tab/glove.

  • String wax & a piece of leather.

  • Bag of hex/allen keys.

  • Bow stringer.

  • Bow square.

  • Spare bow string.

  • Spare cheap stick-on arrow rest.

  • Spare arrow nocks.

  • A sealed tube of superglue.

  • Small hand towel.

Safety Tip

Once again with feeling!

🌩 Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening me 🌩

Archers & archery usually continues despite bad weather. However, we are not the postal service. We have limits. One of them is lightning. It is almost a universal rule, that at the first sign of thunder (and therefore lightning) in the area then all outdoor archery is to cease. It may resume once it has been deemed to have passed by the DOS. If it happens towards the end of the shooting session, you might as well pack up and go home. It’s over.

If you don’t understand why, check out this recent fatal incident, & closer to home too. ☹️
