Club News
• A HUGE thanks to all of the club, especially to Volunteers, Competitors, and the inconvenienced members, over the Archery Queensland (State) Championships held at our club. Honestly, the list of people to thank is too long, so I’ll just single out a few club members of the notable selfless contributions: Geff Chen & Rob Connell who both put significant effort over three(3) days without even competing.😮 They did countless jobs, big & small. Dale Waldron & Brian Dymock put in over-the-top contributions whilst competing. Dale was there from Start to Finish both days. 👏🫶
• The AQs we just held was the biggest competition (Nr of Lanes) that our club has ever held. We held it successfully, and it ran well, so you can all be proud of our club & yourselves. Well done! 🙌
• New Butt Frames - You may notice that our compound target butts have a new design, & a new way of holding the target numbers. They are light, stronger, simpler, & just better! That’s all the work of our Treasurer/Carpenter, Darren Johnston. Give him a huge thanks when you see him.👏
• New Target Pins - You may notice that we have new CAC-branded target pins. We are moving to them from the old-style roof nail & milk bottle top solution. Not only do they look more professional, but they don’t cause punctures to car tires, or feet, or give false positives on the metal detectors! They’ve been 3D printed by club members from our own designs. The downside is that they are not as strong as metal obviously, so please take a little more care when putting them into the targets. Eg. Don’t bash them with your hand etc. 🔨 != 🎯
• Calling All Rookies - SQAS (our local governing body) are hosting their Target Championships on the 18/19th of July. Before you ask, if you can shoot the required distance (you don’t have to be good!); You should consider doing it. You’ll probably find there is bling in it for you. If you don’t feel up to that, they have introduced this year a special Rookie competition on the 19th with shorter distances for newer archers. Give it a go. You will surprise yourself! (Register)👼
OMG, Records!
Put your hands together to recognise some new & preliminary State & National records shot recently by our stellar young girls: 📣👏👏📣
• Ruth Chamberlain - State - Compound U14 WA18 - 560 -> 562 (one off a new national record)😲
• Ruth Chamberlain - National - Compound U14 AA30/720 - 713 -> 713 (more X’s) 😁
• Ellen Martini - National - Recurve U18 & U21 WA60/720 - 835 -> 850 (5 off the open!) 😮💣🤯
Etiquette
Please keep your gear & possessions within your shooting lane allotment. Move it with you if & when you change lanes/targets. We commonly think that space is a limited resource only on the shooting line. It’s an issue behind the waiting line as well. If you have lots of stuff, consider putting some of it up against the containers, or against the wall under the covered area. When a lane overflows it can have a knock-on effect impacting a lot of your fellow archers.
If there is someone else’s gear in your lane, politely ask whose it is, and if they can move it. I haven’t yet met an archer who wouldn’t eagerly comply with that request.
“Alternative” Archery Facts
Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.
Archery: Trying to do the same thing over and over expecting a consistent result.
Tip of the Week
🔃 Upside down Miss Jane! 🔝Recurve bow limbs often have a little sticker on them to indicate which one is the upper limb & which is the lower one. Yes, it matters. Sometimes that sticker wears off or the print is too hard to read. A quick way to tell without looking at the label, is typically the upper limb has the big printed logo/branding on the outer/target side, and the lower limb has it on the inner/archer side. That’s not a hard rule, but 90% of the time it works.
My guess is that the upper limb is blank on the inside, to not distract the archer. A logo on the top outer side is there for everyone else to see who's awesome limbs you’re using. The lower limb has it on the inside, to remind you whose awesome limbs you’re using.
Safety Tip
🏹 Stringing your bow 🏹
Compound bow archers have to use a bow-press when working with their strings & cables.
The rest of us all have to string and de-string our bows before & after use. The club recommends you either use the bow-stringing posts (top of the stairs, corner of the undercroft, several places along the covered shooting structure, or between the main & gear sheds) or the use of a suitable dedicated bow-stringer device. Every non-compound archer should carry a bow stringer suitable for their bow with them at all times. It may be quicker & easier to use some of the techniques to string & de-string your bow using your legs or feet/ground etc, but doing so not only risks damage to your bow, but also the real risk of serious injury to yourself or bystanders. Therefore, the club does not recommend you string/de-string your bow without the aid of the appropriate tools. Using a $5+ bow-stringer can potentially save you a lot of heartache.
If you are unsure of how to use the posts or a bow-stringer, please feel free to ask for help.
