World Archery & Olympic News

Behold Compound Bow division Archers, for your day has finally come. The Archery Gods have answered your prayers. WA has announced that a mixed team compound event will be held at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Start your training now!! 🥇🥈🥉

Etiquette

Please keep your gear & possessions within your shooting lane allotment. Move it with you if & when you change lanes/targets. We commonly think that space is a limited resource only on the shooting line. It’s an issue behind the waiting line as well. If you have lots of stuff, consider putting some of it up against the containers, or against the wall under the covered area. When a lane overflows it can have a knock-on effect impacting a lot of your fellow archers.

If there is someone else’s gear in your lane, politely ask whose it is, and if they can move it. I haven’t yet met an archer who wouldn’t eagerly comply with that request.

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Archery is relaxing as yoga except you get to shoot something.

Tip of the Week.

🕵🕴 Secret Agent Stuff 🦯♿

Ever been injured or unable to collect & score your own arrows? Or perhaps, like me, you wish you could just magically have your arrows return to your quiver after you shoot them.

Well technically, you can. The magic that allows it is called an Athlete's Agent. The agent can tell you where your arrows have landed, help you set up, collect & score your arrows at the target, and represent you at the target with your fellow archers &/or an archery judge.

An Athlete's Agent is required most commonly when the Archer has an impairment. I.e. Confined to a wheelchair, Visually Impaired, etc. Or perhaps has been injured. E.g. Twisted an ankle on the stairs. Heck, it even happens in big competitions where having an archer score & removing their own arrows from a target would <gasp> ruin the spectacle for TV etc.

The point of this tip is, if there is a roadblock to you conducting archery, there may be an established solution to help you get around it & let you continue to shoot. Archery is about how well you shoot, not how good you are at retrieving arrows.

Safety Tip

The Dead Arrow Line

As regular archers, we are all familiar with the horizontal Shooting & Waiting Lines, but there is a third horizontal line you should know about, The 3 Metre (Dead Arrow) Line is just in front of the shooting line. Often we only draw it on our field during competitions, however it exists even if not drawn.

The World Archery rules (12.5.1) state:

An arrow may be considered not to have been shot if:

  • The arrow falls from the bow or is mis-shot and a part of the arrow shaft lies within the zone between the shooting line and the 3m line, and provided the arrow has not rebounded;

The safety part of this tip is:

  1. If you ever feel you can’t safely let down from a full or partial draw, you can tilt forward & shoot the arrow directly into the ground in front of you and incur no penalty & no archer, arrow, or bow damage. Huzzah!

  2. If for whatever reason your arrow comes off your bow and falls in that space, Do not retrieve the arrow unless you can do so safely, without moving your feet and potentially impeding a fellow archer. E.g. You can not cross forward of the shooting line to get it during an end.

  3. If you’ve got spare arrows in your quiver, don’t even think of picking up the fallen arrow. It’s just not worth it. This is why you have spares.

  4. During a competition, let a judge know. Otherwise, wait for the 3-whistle signal before moving forward to retrieving it.
