Club News
• Tentative - We are looking at holding a Working Bee on the weekend of May 23/24th. The aim is to fix the new under-cover surface down near the Come & Try end & extend it a lot further. If you’re able to assist with this, please let the committee know. 🐝👷🚧🐝
• Looking for Volunteers - We are doing the inflatable archery range at the Sherwood Festival. Bernd, Brian, & David will be there. Let Bernd know if you can help out for an hour or so. We’ll need many hands to answer archery questions, fetch shot arrows, re-float balls, and help excite kids (big & small) have a crack at archery! 🏹🌳🌳🌳🎪
• RECORDS - Kristy is resigning from the Club Recorder role. We need someone to stand up and take over the role. It requires knowing a little about how archery competition rounds work, ability to scan scoresheets (scanner or phone app), and some light computer skills. Talk to former club recorders (David, Phil, or ChrisK) if you’d like to know more.
• Target Cores - Brian has heard word that the replacement target cores (for the round target butts) are almost ready to ship. So, soon, there will be a working bee to upgrade some of the sad(er) target butts. This is especially good news as the last few weeks have seen every available target lane in use!
• Help Wanted Martin Lau will be taking time away from archery & the club. He is the awesome bloke who manages the coaching/open/closing roster & email reminders for the Come & Try classes. We need to find someone(s) to take over these vital tasks. They are not onerous, nor time consuming, but they are regular, ongoing, & important. If you have some time, please consider helping the club out by taking on at least some of these tasks. See David or Martin for more. 🙏
• Please welcome our newest, fully approved club members: 👏👏👏
(U14) Lloyd Robson-Petch, (Open) Marcus Allison, & Jason Asher
Etiquette
Please keep your gear & possessions within your shooting lane allotment. Move it with you if & when you change lanes/targets. We commonly think that space is a limited resource only on the shooting line. It’s an issue behind the waiting line as well. If you have lots of stuff, consider putting some of it up against the containers, or against the wall under the covered area. When a lane overflows it can have a knock-on effect impacting a lot of your fellow archers.
If there is someone else’s gear in your lane, politely ask whose it is, and if they can move it. I haven’t yet met an archer who wouldn’t eagerly comply with that request.
“Alternative” Archery Facts
Archerocide noun (Australia)
When a DOS, deliberately or accidentally, or maliciously, allows shooting to commence while archers are still retrieving arrows.
Tip of the Week
Buy the numbers
In addition to getting coaching, one of the best ways to improve your archery is to actually shoot more. (How good is it that you get better by having fun & shooting more arrows! - David)
A general rule of thumb is: (Lower end for Compound & Higher end for Recurve)
◦ Good Club level: 100-200 arrows per week, 1-2 days per week.
◦ Top State level: 300-400 arrows per week, 2-3 days per week; Some Gym..
◦ Top National level: 500-1000 arrows per week, 3+ days per week. Gym 1+ days per week.
◦ International level: 1200-2000 arrows per week. 5-6 days per week. Gym 3 days per week.
Safety Tip
🏹 Stringing your bow 🏹
Compound bow archers have to use a bow-press when working with their strings & cables.
The rest of us all have to string and de-string our bows before & after use. The club recommends you either use the bow-stringing posts (top of the stairs, corner of the undercroft, several places along the covered shooting structure, or between the main & gear sheds) or the use of a suitable dedicated bow-stringer device. Every non-compound archer should carry a bow stringer suitable for their bow with them at all times. It may be quicker & easier to use some of the techniques to string & de-string your bow using your legs or feet/ground etc, but doing so not only risks damage to your bow, but also the real risk of serious injury to yourself or bystanders. Therefore, the club does not recommend you string/de-string your bow without the aid of the appropriate tools. Using a $5+ bow-stringer can potentially save you a lot of heartache.
If you are unsure of how to use the posts or a bow-stringer, please feel free to ask for help.
