Club News
• [Help] We are looking for volunteers to help out with several administrative tasks & positions as the club grows & has gotten much bigger. Eg. Equipment officer, Membership officer, Project Management, Whipper-snipper, you name it … Keen? Let us know! 👷
• We held a stall at the Sherwood Arboretum’s 100th year celebration. Many kids had fun with the archery range. (Photos) Thanks to the Martini & Dymock families for doing that! 🏹🌲🌳🌴🎋
• Please welcome our newest, fully approved club members: 👏👏
(Open) Scott Schultz & (60+) Bruno Greimel
Etiquette
If you’re still at the club near packing up time, please offer to help. It really is appreciated. There are a number of small, simple tasks that can be done to make life easier. Eg.:
• Flip up the “archery in progress” signs at the top of the stairs & entry gate. 😍❤❤
• Taking down the Red “Shooting” Flag 🥰❤❤
• Packing up the chairs & tables. 😻
• Taking the rubbish bin bag home to your wheelie bin. 😍❤💓💝
• Help close the container & shed doors. 💕
• Open the gates surrounding the field to let the kangaroos back in. 🦘
I can say from experience, any one of those being done helps a lot & is very appreciated.
“Alternative” Archery Facts
Archerocide noun (Australia)
When a DOS, deliberately or accidentally, or maliciously, allows shooting to commence while archers are still retrieving arrows.
Tip of the Week.
🎖🏅 The Lord of the Blings: The Return of the Bling 🏅🎖You’ve all seen it. That shiny Bling being handed out when the club has a meeting.
“We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious!”
Once you start shooting in club (or higher) competitions, you can earn plenty of bling:
• There is classification bling for shooting to a certain standard 3 times in a year.
• Perhaps quicker to earn, yet more elusive depending on your bow type, are the “All Gold” & “Perfect” awards available at each distance. They are available in Bronze (Club), Silver (State), & Gold (National) versions too.
• Then there are score-based awards for special rounds. e.g. WA 1440s. The FITA/WA Star, the FITA/WA Target Awards, and Archery Australia Australian Star.
Archer’s Diary keeps track of the classification & awarded bling. If you’ve earned it, tick the appropriate box on your scoresheet and/or contact the Club’s Recorder.
ProTip: You will need to check your individual event results in the Notes column for All Gold & Perfects. (example) and click “Event Awards” on tournament results. E.g. tournament -> “Event Awards”. Also check iscored.today’s archers summary after every shoot, for other opportunities too.
Note: Unlike other clubs, we don’t charge when you claim eligible bling for the first time.
Safety Tip
🔥😰 Heatstroke 🧊😳
With summer comes one of the more dangerous aliment Australian archers commonly face. It can strike when you least expect it. It doesn’t have to be the hottest day on record; you might have been fine last weekend when it was 3-5℃ hotter, but the situation could be slightly different this weekend. Contrary to popular thought, drinking cold drinks/water on hot days does not help. In fact it makes it far far worse. Ask me how I know! - David.
Symptoms: rapid pulse & fast, shallow breathing; trouble speaking, slurred speech; problems concentrating or coordinating movements; aggressive or strange behaviour; dizziness, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness; sudden rise in body temperature; hot and dry and possibly red skin, possibly with no sweat; dry, swollen tongue; headache, nausea or vomiting; intense thirst.
First Aid: Tell someone early if you have some of those symptoms. Get in the shade. Sit or lay down. Remove excess clothing. Small sips of cool (not cold) water. Sponging with water & fan the damp skin. Placing cold packs under their armpits or groin, or on the back of their neck. Call for/get medical attention. Under no circumstances do they drive themselves home.
Prevention: Drink plenty of water – even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid hot or sugary drinks; Keep cool – try to avoid direct sun. Wear a hat and lightweight, loose-fitting, cotton clothing. If it’s just too hot or humid, consider giving Archery a miss that day. No experienced archer will think less of you for saying “It’s too hot, I’d rather not.”
