Club News
• New - We now have a set of D-Loop pliers available for our compound bow archers. It’s in with the other pliers.
• (Un)Common-sense - If it’s been raining a fair bit, DO NOT drive on the archery field. When the ground is soggy, it’s easy for a single vehicle to wreck the grass & put ruts in the field. Please don’t drive on it unless you absolutely have to. Eg. Loading or Unloading a Para archer. If you do have to, drive straight to the shooting line’s large concrete area. You can easily get bogged if you park off the shooting lanes (in front of the green Target Shed). Ask me how I know!
• The SQAS Clout Championships were held at MPB today. Our archers (Bronwyn Healing & David Conran) brought home Gold.🥇🥇
• Please welcome our newest, fully approved club members: 👏👏 👏👏
(U16) Jordan Davies, (Open) Edith Wiskar, Dominic Antonel, & (60+) Peter Bye
Etiquette
When you’ve finished shooting, please quietly step back from the Shooting Line to the Waiting Line to give other archers a chance to finish without interruption. Ideally, make your exit from the line when the archers are not in the middle of their shot process.
“Alternative” Archery Facts
Forecast for Winter: The Archery Gods™ will favour archers who get up early in the morning as they appreciate the sacrifice of bare feet on a tiled bathroom floor. Arrow shafts will also have a slightly stiffer spine value, unless you include them in your archery warm up routine. One of your arrows will fall shorter than the others in solidarity for the shortening day length. Male archers are reminded that this is the season to dig out your chestguard. Our kangaroos will be 6.283% lazier, so please adjust accordingly.
Tip of the Week
🗲👟The Humble Shoelace👟🗲
Why do archers use a finger sling or a wrist strap? For an average recurve bow the arrow leaves the bow in about 10-20 milliseconds; in other words it’s gone before you can even blink. The average human reaction time is 150-200 milliseconds; 10 times slower. This means, in order to catch your bow you have to pre-emptively start to grab the bow before you release. You are moving the bow-hand & bow before the release. This translates to accuracy down range. Thus It is better to trust a sling to catch your bow; Or are you faster than The Flash?
Safety Tip
🧨💪🤯 Beware of Exploding Limbs 💣💪💥
During a club competition we had a case of a recurve limb spontaneously & spectacularly delaminating on the shooting line. Several ends had already been successfully shot. The limbs were still under warranty, a year old, never dry fired, used regularly, & looked after well. Not only did the archer in question get hit in the mouth as the limb let go; one of the limbs, the string, & the arrow all left the riser and travelled a couple of metres forward. This was before reaching full draw too. We should learn from & be reminded by this:
1) NEVER pull back on a bow when there is someone in front of it. Even if there is no arrow loaded. When drawing, ALWAYS treat it as a loaded weapon. Just like a blank round in a gun, it can still potentially cause serious injury.
2) Periodically check your bow limbs for cracks & damage, not just after a bad sound or dry fire etc. Perhaps do it monthly &/or when you wax your string.
3) Even modern gear & materials are not immune.
4) This can potentially happen at any time. There was no prior odd sound, no warning, no different feel to the bow, or change in arrow flight etc. Just BANG!
