Club News
• 🐝👷 Working-Bee 🚧🐝 We will be holding a Working Bee on the May 23rd. The aim is to focus on the target butts, field, and carpark. If we have people & time left we will focus on arrow & bow maintenance, plus general cleanup. As usual a free ground fee credit & food/drink provided.
• Looking for Volunteers - We are doing the inflatable archery range at the Sherwood Festival. Bernd, Brian, & David will be there. Let Bernd know if you can help out for an hour or so. We’ll need many hands to answer archery questions, fetch shot arrows, re-float balls, and help excite kids (big & small) have a crack at archery! 🏹🌳🌳🌳🎪
• RECORDS - Kristy is resigning from the Club Recorder role. We need someone to stand up and take over the role. It requires knowing a little about how archery competition rounds work, ability to scan scoresheets (scanner or phone app), and some light computer skills. Talk to former club recorders (David, Phil, or ChrisK) if you’d like to know more.
• Help Wanted Martin Lau will be taking time away from archery & the club. He is the awesome bloke who manages the coaching/open/closing roster & email reminders for the Come & Try classes. We need to find someone(s) to take over these vital tasks. They are not onerous, nor time consuming, but they are regular, ongoing, & important. If you have some time, please consider helping the club out by taking on at least some of these tasks. See David or Martin for more. 🙏
• Please welcome our newest, fully approved club members: 👏👏

Etiquette
Sharing a target
We only have a finite number of lanes & target butts at the club. When the club is getting full, we need to utilise them better. It’s quite easy to share a target butt between 3 archers. This is even the norm in competitions. You can even squeeze 4 people on a single target. More people per target has a number of benefits. First, you might get to make new friends. Second, the size of the field the DOS has to control is smaller & more manageable. Third, you don’t have to drag out a target! ;-)
Please consider sharing a target lane with someone whenever practical. E.g. If there is a target out at 20m, please consider asking if you can join their target before getting out a new target butt.
“Alternative” Archery Facts
Archery is relaxing as yoga except you get to shoot something.
Tip of the Week
If you’ve made a change to your archery equipment, it is recommended you bring your target into 5-10 metres and slowly progress back out to your normal distance. You may feel this is unnecessary, but it often pays off. A small change can make a large difference; Distance magnifies this. The club has plenty of experienced archers who have lost or damaged an arrow thinking “It’ll be right. It’s not that different”.
Safety Tip
🎯 Target Butt & Field Layout 👀
Generally, the Director of Shooting (DOS) is located at the very side of an archery field, so that they can see the entire shooting line, & all of the targets (and kangaroos) at once. In order for them to have an unobstructed view, the targets need to be strictly laid out such that the archers furthest from the DOS have their target butts closest to the shooting line. The closer to the DOS, the further out the target butt can be. This allows for the DOS’s view of every target butt (and the archers at it) to not be obstructed in any way & at any time. Imagine a diagonal line of targets.
If you are moving a target butt, you need to ensure that all targets on one side of your target are of less than or equal distance from the shooting line, and that the other side has targets equal to or greater distance from the shooting line. If you feel you need to break this guideline, you should obtain permission from the DOS first.
Our club typically locates the DOS at the very right hand side of the field. Our field also has the lane numbers increase from left (eg. 6) to right (eg. 35). The DOS would typically be at lane 35+. To demonstrate by example, assume you wanted to take a target out to 30m:
• If there was already a target at 20m in lane 20, the first available lane to you would be 21;
• If there was another target at 40m in lane 27, the last available lane would be 26.
• If there was already a target at 30m on lane 24, then lanes 21 to 26 would be fine.
The TL;DR:
Please don’t stagger targets on the field such that there is one at 20m, then 30m, then 20m, then 40m, then 10m, then 50m for example. It should be: 10m, 20m, 20m, 30m, & 50m. Doing otherwise hinders the DOS’s view of the field & archers. Unordered targets significantly reduce archer safety; Most likely yours.
