Club News

Tentative - We are looking at holding a Working Bee on the weekend of May 23/24th. The aim is to fix the new under-cover surface down near the Come & Try end & extend it a lot further. If you’re able to assist with this, please let the committee know. 🐝👷🚧🐝

Free - We have been donated a 30lbs RH wooden recurve bow. If you’re interested in it, please see Brian, David, or Rob etc to plead your case. It deserves a good home. 🏹💸

Help Wanted Martin Lau will be taking time away from archery & the club. He is the awesome bloke who manages the coaching/open/closing roster & email reminders for the Come & Try classes. We need to find someone(s) to take over these vital tasks. They are not onerous, nor time consuming, but they are regular, ongoing, & important. If you have some time, please consider helping the club out by taking on at least some of these tasks. See David or Martin for more. 🙏

• Please welcome our newest, fully approved club members: 👏👏👏👏👏

(Open) Ou (Kitty) Yu, Laura Hartsuiker, & (70+) Conrad Hedrick

Etiquette

When you’ve finished shooting, please quietly step back from the Shooting Line to the Waiting Line to give other archers a chance to finish without interruption. Ideally, make your exit from the line when the archers are not in the middle of their shot process.

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Forecast for May: The Archery Gods™ will favour archers who co-ordinate their fletches with their shoe-laces, & their bow risers with their warmer gear; But only if both sets co-ordinate. All shoe-laces must match for this blessing, even the one used as a finger sling. Longbowers are excused, because the Archery Gods™ know they can’t tie shoe laces as they are too complicated.

If you’re not using a finger-sling, sorry, no boon or blessing for you this time. Maybe next year. Additionally remember to adjust & allow for the thermal shrinkage the target faces and the overall distance to the target; plus any extra mass you put on with warmer clothes. Details of these precise calculations can be found in an online archery forum nearest to you.

Tip of the Week

🔍👀 The Metal Detector 🔉🔊

Losing an arrow is easy to do. Finding them, not so much. Especially with longer grass. For this reason, the club has a metal detector located just inside the target shed, on the left wall. It goes by many names: The Minesweeper, The Wand of Shame, The +5 Wand of Recovery, etc.. Don’t waste effort just visually looking for an arrow after the end in which it was lost. Go directly to the metal detector.

For optimal usage:

• Ensure all the dials & switches are set to their respective “gold” location marks.

• The “loop” is parallel to & as close as possible to the ground as you swing it.

• The cable is snuggly plugged in all the way into the control box.

• Test it detects one of your arrows before proceeding.

• Take small steps (~20cm) and complete a wide swing arc per step.

• Turn it off between ends. Setting the Sensitivity knob to its lowest setting turns it off.

• Ask a barebow archer for help. They have lots of experience with losing & finding arrows.

Safety Tip

➶➳ Check your arrows ➷⇏

Never shoot a damaged arrow! Separate it until it has been suitably repaired. It can be incredibly dangerous to you & your fellow archers.

• Before every archery session, check your arrows (and other equipment) for any damage.

• When walking back from collecting your arrows is the ideal time to quickly check your arrows. Has a nock been struck or come loose?; Has a point come partially out or been left in the target? Has a fletch torn or come off? It’s best to discover this before the start of the next end.

• If an arrow has struck something other than the soft part of the target butt, give the arrow a thorough inspection. When this happens it is quite common for nocks to crack or come off; points to partially or fully come out; Or worst of all, the arrow to be bent, cracked, or split. In addition to visual & tactile inspection, give any carbon shaft a good flex, then rotate the shaft 90°, and flex again! This can help expose mid-shaft damage.

If you’re unsure what to look for, ask an experienced archer, instructor, or coach.
