YouFor2032 Olympic Program
Archery Queensland with SOAS and NQAA are partnering with the QAS again in 2025 to offer Archery as part of the YouFor2032 program, which aims to identify and develop talented young athletes from across Queensland in Olympic sports which they may not have tried before, or may not be aware would suit them. Now that RACQ is on board as an official sponsor, the program is going to get bigger and better than ever before.
The window is currently open to young Queenslanders aged between 13 and 23 for able bodied, or 13 and 30 for paras to apply to be part of Cohort 4.
To do this:
1. Download the App, by following the link (iPhone, Android) or searching in your App Store for YouFor2032 Talent Search
2. Follow the prompts in the App to take you through some fitness tests, find out about your sporting history, and what sports you’re keen to try out of the long list (nudge - Archery is in there!)
You will need to register by 4 May 2025, which is only three weeks away, if you want to be considered this year. Pass this on to the young people in your family and friend circle, as this cutoff date isn’t widely known. This is a great program to get into!
More information can be found at https://www.qasport.qld.gov.au/
Women and Girls in Archery
We invite all women and girls to join an archery female focused event.
The Queensland Government has provided Archery Queensland with funding to deliver a focused program for women and girls in archery and archery coaches. The focus is specifically on education related to performance factors such as nutrition, psychology, strength and conditioning, training loads and how these impact females. These sessions are designed for all our female membership regardless of age and level of involvement in archery. Parents and guardians of youth archers are also welcome to attend these sessions.
The delivery of the various topics will be via Zoom on the dates and times, as listed in the program below. With a face to face event (Townsville and Samford) towards the end of the program. All participants are invited to register via this link.
The online sessions will be made available on the AQ and SQAS websites following the sessions.
Etiquette
The Come & Try (CnT) & Beginners classes at the club take priority over the archery field, and over the club equipment. E.g. If you’re at the club early (before 10am on Saturdays) please don’t take any of the chairs, ground quivers, or archery equipment without consulting with one of the class’s instructors first. That equipment may be needed by the class.
“Alternative” Archery Facts
Archerocide noun (Australia)
When a DOS, deliberately or accidentally, or maliciously, allows shooting to commence while archers are still retrieving arrows.
Tip of the Week.
🔫 Six Shooter 🔫
When shooting in an outdoor target competition, a good idea is to only have six arrows in your quiver. Take your spare arrows from your quiver and put them in or on the ground at the shooting line. This stops you from accidentally shooting more than six or forgetting to shoot all six, but still allows you to grab one in case you discover a problem with one of your arrows. Even elite archers have been known to lose count and shoot the wrong number of arrows.
Safety Tip
🏹 High Draws 🏹
For those of you who have participated in the Xmas or Easter Clout, you will know just how far arrows can go from a low poundage bow. I.e. Extremely far in some cases (cough Stacy cough). Imagine doing that with your lighter carbon arrows & higher poundage bows. Thus, you need to keep your arrow fairly level with the ground from start to finish of your draw cycle. High draws are not permitted. I.e. You may not draw a bow in such a manner that if the arrow was accidentally released it may travel beyond the safety zone. If in doubt cease immediately and ask an instructor or coach.
