I've been asked by several members about the rules/format of the Speed Shooting event this Saturday afternoon (1pm: After the Come & Try class).

A reminder of the basic format:

An archer shoots 6 arrows, at 5 metres from a 80cm 10-ring target face.
Their final score is the total scored by the arrows divided by the time it takes to shoot them.
e.g.
David shoots his six arrows, and gets an arrow score of 33. He shoots them in 20.7 seconds. He gets a final score of 33 / 20.7 = 1.59

This is just an experiment. We are trying it out at our club. It is based on an European Trad Archery Speed Shooting comp which is apparently 10 arrows at 10m at an 80cm face.

Rules so far (they may change based on how things go. e.g. Safety):
  • There are no bow categories, gender or ages etc at this stage.
It's everyone vs everyone. There are no Archery Australia rules involved. We may review this later.
  • How is the time measured?
It will be from the moment the archer releases the first arrow till the time the last arrow lands. It will be measured by a stop watch by an official (probably me)
  • How will arrows be scored?
Usual World Archery Scoring rules. X's are still just 10s. Xs & 10s have no special meaning. We will only be recording the total arrow score, not individual arrows.
  • How many attempts can I have?
Not sure yet. Depending how things go for time .. up to 5 or so??
  • Can I use different bows & arrows if I want?
Yes. Mixed lots of arrows in the end is totally fine.
  • Where will it take place?
We will hold it at one of the far extremes of the normal field. Most likely at the Come & Try end. This is to ensure we are as far as possible from people just in case something happens we don't expect. There will be at least 5 lanes of separation. We will be in our own field and under our own DOS.
  • How many people will be shooting at once?
Only one person at a time at a single target. Only the archer & DOS/Official will be allowed at the shooting line for safety reasons.
  • Is there a prize? Is there bling? Does it cost me anything extra to do this?
No. This is just an experiment at this stage. You can earn pride in your prowess and rank yourself with others.
  • Do I have to draw from my quiver? Can I hold the Arrows in my <insert body part>?
You can hold and shoot them however you like. One arrow at a time. How you get them from your hand to the target is up to you.
  • Can I use a <insert device or method>?
Thumb rings, gloves, bare fingers, carbon arrows, wood arrows, real feathers, plastic vanes, finger tabs, modified nocks etc are all allowed. If it is easily recognised as archery gear, it's allowed. Devices that help you nock the arrow or auto load, are obviously not. Officials opinion is final.
  • Why six arrows?
    a) Faster & b) Not everyone has 10 arrows .. yet.
