Club News

β€’ Volunteer of the Week: Bernd Martini - for endless club opens & closes in the past few weeks, trips to the shops to restock the fridge. Most of all, he’s not doing it for himself. It may have something to do with his archery loving daughters. I think they even allowed him a day off. πŸ”πŸ”“

β€’ We now have two trial web cameras located at the club, They are currently located in the Titan shed & in the Target container. We will be putting up warning signs soon, and hopefully allowing access to them so you can see if the club is open or not. Until we get council approval, none will be facing out towards the range/park lands, especially while the club is closed. More on this as it progresses. In the meantime, no games of strip-poker should be held in those locations. πŸŽ₯πŸ“ΈπŸ“Ή

β€’ A big thanks to all the soakedΒ  volunteer coaches who helped out at Invictus Come & Try class. They certainly put up with some atrocious weather conditions during the class. 🌞πŸ”₯β›†πŸŒ§β˜”β›ˆβ›…

β€’ Quote of the Week: β€œIf it ain’t rainin’, you ain’t trainin’” (Somewhere, Ellen is nodding furiously)

Etiquette

If you’ve signed up for a competition event (in Archers Diary or not), if you can’t make it, please let someone know as soon as you possibly can. An absent yet expected archer causes a lot of chaos for competition organisers, the people setting up the field, and for other archers. Unfortunately, archers can’t just remove themselves or their registrations, or make changes to it. You have to contact the organisers for that to happen.

β€œAlternative” Archery Facts

The β€œAdvanced Barebow” archery class has a chapter on β€œHow to repair target butt frames”.

Tip of the Week.

🎢🎯 I like big Target Butts and I can not lie! 🎯🎢

Most of our members are familiar with the big 122cm 10-ring target face. I.e. X,10,9, …, 3, 2, 1 etc. Yeah, I know that’s eleven (11) rings, Why? … because Archery!

This is the probably the most common size target face in outdoor world archery events. But(t) did you know our club has other sizes of target faces available too?

The next size down is the 80cm 10-ring face, this gets used in several less-common competitive rounds. Shooting it at 30 metres is said to be roughly the equivalent of shooting the 122cm face at 50 metres. This can be useful if you’re a beginner or youth archer, or don’t have a bow that is powerful enough to shoot 50m easily, or have the available travel in your bow’s sight. Because you’re effectively shooting at a target the same size as at 50m, but much closer, you have more safety margins (more soft squidgy target butt to hit if you miss) than you would if shooting at 50m.

If you’re worried about damaging your arrows or losing arrows in the grass when shooting too great a distance just remember you can try a smaller target face to increase the difficulty & still protect your arrows, and not have to upgrade your gear & muscles just yet.

Safety Tip

🎯 Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  β†™πŸ‘¨ What a let down! πŸ‘©β†˜ Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  🎯

Did you know you don’t have to shoot every time you nock an arrow, raise & pull back your bow? Occasionally as archers, we need to not shoot an arrow. I know, it seems impossible to do at times. The safest way to not release an arrow whilst at full draw, is to lower your bow arm, so the arrow is pointing at the ground. Then gradually let the string go forward, while still maintaining the drawing hand position on the string. Doing it this way means the arrow can’t go anywhere unexpected if your hand slips during the let down process. Practise this a few times so you feel comfortable.

Remember, you may have to emergency stop due to a field safety issue, pointing the bow down is the quickest & safest way to ensure an accidental release doesn’t cause a serious issue.
