Club News

β€’ The club is investigating replacing part of the undershade area with crushed/decomposed granite. More information when we have some more details.

Etiquette

If you’re still at the club near packing up time, please offer to help. It really is appreciated. There are a number of small, simple tasks that can be done to make life easier. Eg.:

β€’ Flip up the β€œarchery in progress” signs at the top of the stairs & entry gate. 😍❀❀

β€’ Taking down the Red β€œShooting” Flag πŸ₯°β€β€

β€’ Packing up the chairs & tables. 😻

β€’ Taking the rubbish bin bag home to your wheelie bin. πŸ˜β€πŸ’“πŸ’

β€’ Help close the container & shed doors. πŸ’•

β€’ Open the gates surrounding the field to let the kangaroos back in. 🦘

I can say from experience, any one of those being done helps a lot & is very appreciated.

β€œAlternative” Archery Facts

If you shoot an asiatic or horse bow in a competition, under β€œthe rules” it is considered a recurve bow, but if you should shoot it in the asiatic-style i.e. with a thumb ring instead of a finger-tab or glove, it is considered a compound bow. Personally, I think if you’re shooting from a horse in a competition, you should be able to consider it whatever bow type you like.

Tip of the Week.

πŸ›‹ Don’t be a coach potato! πŸ₯”

Want some free expert archery help? All you have to do is ask! Our club has twelve (12) Level 2 & eleven (11) Level 1 Coaches. Under AA policy, only Level 2 (or higher) coaches are allowed to provide advanced 1-on-1 archery coaching. L1’s technically can only provide entry-level advice. You can find photos & names of our L2 coaches on the club noticeboard. When available, we also have a dedicated coaching lane with signs, so keep an eye out for that. In short, most of our coaches would love to offer you free advice & help aspiring archers. If you want their help, the etiquette is to politely ask first, and if they are not busy, they then might spend a few minutes with you & give you some advice and some area to practise on. They typically won’t have spare resources to spend extended time with you, so don’t expect that. If you want more structured coaching, speak to our club’s Head Coach, Rob Connell. He may be able to personally take you under his wing, or direct you to another coach who has the time, specialist knowledge, & experience you might require.

Our L2 Coaches are: Alex, Bron, David, Emma, Hayden, Lindsay, Mark, MichaelB, MichealS, Pierre, Rob, Sal, & Sandy. (none bite!)

Safety Tip

πŸ”₯😰 Heatstroke 🧊😳

With summer comes one of the more dangerous aliment Australian archers commonly face. It can strike when you least expect it. It doesn’t have to be the hottest day on record; you might have been fine last weekend when it was 3-5℃ hotter, but the situation could be slightly different this weekend. Contrary to popular thought, drinking cold drinks/water on hot days does not help. In fact it makes it far far worse. Ask me how I know! - David.

Symptoms: rapid pulse & fast, shallow breathing; trouble speaking, slurred speech; problems concentrating or coordinating movements; aggressive or strange behaviour; dizziness, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness; sudden rise in body temperature; hot and dry and possibly red skin, possibly with no sweat; dry, swollen tongue; headache, nausea or vomiting; intense thirst.

First Aid: Tell someone early if you have some of those symptoms. Get in the shade. Sit or lay down. Remove excess clothing. Small sips of cool (not cold) water. Sponging with water & fan the damp skin. Placing cold packs under their armpits or groin, or on the back of their neck. Call for/get medical attention. Under no circumstances do they drive themselves home.

Prevention: Drink plenty of water – even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid hot or sugary drinks; Keep cool – try to avoid direct sun. Wear a hat and lightweight, loose-fitting, cotton clothing. If it’s just too hot or humid, consider giving Archery a miss that day. No experienced archer will think less of you for saying β€œIt’s too hot, I’d rather not.”
