Club News

If/when you forget to pay your ground fees or to sign in, you can now make restitution remotely. See our latest FAQ entry: “Oops! I forgot to pay my Ground Fees, can I pay it online?” 💸

Reminder - You need to sign-in and pay before shooting. We’ve had lots of reports of people who are forgetting one or both. Please don’t make us have to have someone police this. 😒

Field Layout - Please be considerate when choosing a lane to shoot in. Longer distances should be to the right of the field (near the stairs), & shorter distances more to the left (nearer the Hire Gear shed). This is also a significant safety issue. (See below) If someone asks you to move your target over, please do so. No-one owns a lane, even if you were there first. If you’re shooting 20m and surrounded by people shooting longer distances, consider moving before being asked. If you’re being coached or in a training group etc, consider moving down to the far left of the field so you don’t hold up everyone else. All of this is starting to become a significant issue given how busy the club is getting when we are open. If there are any doubts, the DOS has the full authority of the management committee to enforce these rules. See some of the diagrams up on the walls for suggested target areas. ⇦ 20m … 70m ⇨

Etiquette

Our club coaches (L1+) get free drinks & snacks from our kitchen area and pay no grounds fees on the days they are rostered on. They also get a 50% discount on Annual Ground Fees too. This is similar to how we do our “working bees”, we do this as a thank-you for their effort in assisting the club. If you’re interested in some self-improvement, training, & helping out the club by becoming an L1 coach, please have a chat with our head coach (Rob). If you’ve been doing archery for over a year, & are over 16, you are probably eligible. SQAS L1 coach courses are run in late February & June.

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Education is important but Archery is more importanter.

Tip of the Week

🛋 Don’t be a coach potato! 🥔

Want some free expert archery help? All you have to do is ask! Our club has twelve (12) Level 2 & eleven (11) Level 1 Coaches. Under AA policy, only Level 2 (or higher) coaches are allowed to provide advanced 1-on-1 archery coaching. L1’s technically can only provide entry-level advice. You can find photos & names of our L2 coaches on the club noticeboard. When available, we also have a dedicated coaching lane with signs, so keep an eye out for that. In short, most of our coaches would love to offer you free advice & help aspiring archers. If you want their help, the etiquette is to politely ask first, and if they are not busy, they then might spend a few minutes with you & give you some advice and some area to practise on. They typically won’t have spare resources to spend extended time with you, so don’t expect that. If you want more structured coaching, speak to our club’s Head Coach, Rob Connell. He may be able to personally take you under his wing, or direct you to another coach who has the time, specialist knowledge, & experience you might require.

Safety Tip

🎯 Target Butt & Field Layout 👀

Generally, the Director of Shooting (DOS) is located at the very side of an archery field, so that they can see the entire shooting line, & all of the targets (and kangaroos) at once. In order for them to have an unobstructed view, the targets need to be strictly laid out such that the archers furthest from the DOS have their target butts closest to the shooting line. The closer to the DOS, the further out the target butt can be. This allows for the DOS’s view of every target butt (and the archers at it) to not be obstructed in any way & at any time. Imagine a diagonal line of targets.

If you are moving a target butt, you need to ensure that all targets on one side of your target are of less than or equal distance from the shooting line, and that the other side has targets equal to or greater distance from the shooting line. If you feel you need to break this guideline, you should obtain permission from the DOS first.

Our club typically locates the DOS at the very right hand side of the field. Our field also has the lane numbers increase from left (eg. 1) to right (eg. 35). The DOS would typically be at lane 35+. To demonstrate by example, assume you wanted to take a target out to 30m:

If there was already a target at 20m in lane 20, the first lane you should use would be 21;

If there was another target at 40m in lane 27, the last available lane would be 26.

If there was already a target at 30m on lane 24, then lanes 21 to 26 would be fine.
