Story Time with Rossco - Holes in One / Robin Hoods   🏌🎯

One shoots the occasional Robin Hood in 39 years of archery…. I’ve shot five, but 4 were close up & 1 was 30m. I do wish I could say they were all intentional...or any of them, for that matter…The first is an “Aww, guys, look at me. !!” moment…all the others are just expensive. With the price of my latest carbon arrows, I’m happy to say I haven’t shot one in recent years. Robert Orrock’s is the only 3 in 1 that I have ever seen.

I digress...It was the Ipswich Clubs’ FITA Gold Star on 19 & 20 August 1989, that produced the most memorable for me. I was shooting with Ross Bambery Sid ?? and Kim B…. Kim is still shooting, I believe, a nice bloke, a hardworking member of the Gold Coast crowd. He does have an unusual voice, sort of a cross between chainsaw & adenoid problem, but you always know where he is. I hope Rossco is still around, somewhere. One of nature’s finest.

I was at full draw and saw a sort of flash on the target face, white stuff fluttering to the ground from the face…As we were using Strammits for butts, I assumed it was straw. When we got to the target, Kim started grizzling about one of his arrows being missing. We all knew he hadn’t missed the target. I saw three white fletches / spin vanes on the ground & asked him if they were his. He said they were, for sure. Next grizzle was from Rossco B..” He’s ****** my arrow !!””

True enough. Kim was shooting the first of the carbon arrows on the scene back then. Skinny little Beman all-carbons, with white fletches. Or, 5 of them had white fletches…...now. Kim’s arrow had buried itself completely , inside one of Rossco’s aluminiums, in the 10, of course; the white flash was the fletches being stripped off on the way in. Kim was so pleased! His arrow was fine.

Not so Rossco's arrow......Rossco wanted to kill him, but was restrained by Sid & I as we didn’t fancy the paperwork…. Happy days

“Alternative” Archery Facts

Forecast for Autumn: The Archery Gods™ will favour gear with the following colours: Luminous Black, Octarine, and any superintelligent shades of the colour blue. Your favourite archery store will only be out of stock of 64.7% of the items you need. A million YouTube monkeys will comment on archery videos this season, but only one comment will be relevant, helpful, insightful, & fix 90% of your problems. Good luck finding it.

Tip of the Week.

🏹 Dear Diary, … 🏹

In order to track archer’s scores & progress, almost all Australian events use an online web-based tool that feeds the data into a nation-wide on-line database, called Archer’s Diary. Once a new archer has been added to the system, every shot you shoot in a competition is recorded (even OzBow). Being added is not an automatic process, someone from our Tournaments Committee needs to do it for you when you’re ready to shoot competitively. Archer’s Diary not only lets you see your own score history, statistics, rankings, Personal Bests(PBs), Awards, & Classification achievements; It also allows you to see any other Australian archers too. It’s great to see how your fellow archers/competition are doing, & even to see in real-time how they are going in an event that’s underway.

This system is also used to sign-up & register for a lot of upcoming events. So take a few minutes to explore it. As almost all competitive archers use it, there are plenty of people you can ask for help. Once you start using it, you’ll be hooked and chasing Classification badges in no time.

Safety Tip

🏹 Stringing your bow 🏹

Compound bow archers have to use a bow-press when working with their strings & cables.

The rest of us all have to string and de-string our bows before & after use. The club recommends you either use the bow-stringing posts (top of the stairs, corner of the undercroft, several places along the covered shooting structure, or between the main & gear sheds) or the use of a suitable dedicated bow-stringer device. Every non-compound archer should carry a bow stringer suitable for their bow with them at all times. It may be quicker & easier to use some of the techniques to string & de-string your bow using your legs or feet/ground etc, but doing so not only risks damage to your bow, but also the real risk of serious injury to yourself or bystanders. Therefore, the club does not recommend you string/de-string your bow without the aid of the appropriate tools. Using a $5+ bow-stringer can potentially save you a lot of heartache.

If you are unsure of how to use the posts or a bow-stringer, please feel free to ask for help.
