Working-Bee - A huge thanks to large turnout and the massive amount of work done. Everything looks a lot better, easier to use, and a lot safer. We almost got the workshop shed leak-proof! Lots of people learned the relaxing Zen-like experience of fletching arrows too. Thank you! 👏👷🚧👏

Etiquette

Talking & making noise on the shooting line is frowned upon, especially during competitions. While it is common for archers shooting socially to talk on & off the shooting line, it is a luxury, not a privilege. Please be mindful of other archers who may be put off by the noise or the conversation topics.

  • If someone is making noise while you’re trying to shoot; Just ask them to stop.

  • If that makes you feel uncomfortable or they don’t stop; Speak to a DOS/Judge.

  • If someone asks you to be quiet while they shoot; Please respect their wishes.

“Alternative” Archery Facts

🌻🌷Archery Forecast for Spring🌹💮

This Spring, The Archery Gods™ will be looking for offerings & sacrifices with a focus on Tiny Screws. e.g. Your new-ish piece of equipment will lose one (or more). You will also find the source of that rattle, but be unable to tighten it. Being the season of regrowth, your collection of hex keys will suitably grow. On the plus side, for your trouble, the Archery Gods™ will grant you a wonderful grouping, just not in the gold; A fabulous end but it will be the last end of practice; Finally they will make you till the soil of the archery field in search of an arrow, or that screw.

Tip of the Week.

😻 Cat Ears, not Rabbit Ears 🐰

A modified excerpt from Judges Newsletter 114

Some judges can get very annoyed when they see ‘rabbits ears’ being used to mark arrow holes. Why is a V unacceptable? A V is not two lines at right angles. A V is really one mark. If you mark the arrow hole like diagram A below, the next arrow to hit near the arrow hole (see B below) will take out the V and, as a judge, they are no longer aware of a marked arrow hole. If by some chance it was a bounce out or shoot through, you would have two unmarked arrow holes which is not much help to a judge or to the archers. If the hole had been marked correctly like C below, when the next arrow hits the target (see D below), even though the top mark has been removed, there is still a mark on the lower arrow hole. This is helpful to the judge to make the right call for the archer.

It is to your advantage and helps a judge and also the archers to make accurate arrow calls.

Safety Tip

🧨💪🤯 Beware of Exploding Limbs 💣💪💥

During a club competition we had a case of a recurve limb spontaneously & spectacularly delaminating on the shooting line. Several ends had already been successfully shot. The limbs were still under warranty, a year old, never dry fired, used regularly, & looked after well. Not only did the archer in question get hit in the mouth as the limb let go; one of the limbs, the string, & the arrow all left the riser and travelled a couple of metres forward. This was before reaching full draw too. We should learn from & be reminded by this:

  1. NEVER pull back on a bow when there is someone in front of it. Even if there is no arrow loaded. When drawing, ALWAYS treat it as a loaded weapon. Just like a blank round in a gun, it can still potentially cause serious injury.

  2. Periodically check your bow limbs for cracks & damage, not just after a bad sound or dry fire etc. Perhaps do it monthly &/or when you wax your string.

  3. Even modern gear & materials are not immune.

  4. This can potentially happen at any time. There was no prior odd sound, no warning, no different feel to the bow, or change in arrow flight etc. Just BANG!
