Club News
• Photos from the AQ championships are available here. Please feel free to add any that you took yourselves too! 📸
• Slippery When Wet - A reminder that the main concreted area between the shipping containers & shooting area is deceptively slippery when wet. Hence the new warning A-frame sign(s). Ask Bernd “The Boot” Martini how he knows. 🌧🥾
• Monthly Medal - June’s competition saw a back-to-back win for El Presidenti Brian Dymock🏅, with Terence De Jong🥈 & Sandy Dunstan🥉. Liezel unsurprisingly slaughtered the 🕷.
• Volunteers for the PPMG’s are needed for the Archery competition that we host (7/8th Nov). The PPMG organisers are giving us 16 shirts for volunteers. If you know you can contribute (and take a task or two) then there’s at least a feed & a free shirt in it for you! Please consider. Shirt sizes need to be locked in by 8th of July. 👕🙏🫶🤝👏
• Calling All Rookies - SQAS (our local governing body) are hosting their Target Championships on the 18/19th of July. Before you ask, if you can shoot the required distance (you don’t have to be good!); You should consider doing it. You’ll probably find there is bling in it for you. If you don’t feel up to that, they have introduced this year a special Rookie competition on the 19th with shorter distances for newer archers. Give it a go. You will surprise yourself! (Register)👼
• 👏Congratulations👏 to Ellen & Liezel who’ve both been selected to represent Australia at the World Archery Field Championships in Yankton, USA in September. Donation links soon! 💸💸
Speaking of which, another local archery (Lexie Feeney) is also going & is raising money to attend by selling a cool archery shirt. 👕💸
• 🙏🙏Help Needed🙏🙏 Martin Lau is stepping away from the club. He is the awesome bloke who manages the coaching/open/closing roster & email reminders for the Come & Try classes. We need someone to take over these vital tasks. They are not onerous, nor time consuming, but they are regular, ongoing, & very important to the club. If you have some time you can commit, please consider helping out by taking on these tasks. See David or Martin for more. 🙏🙏🙏
• Please welcome our newest, fully approved club members: 👏👏

Etiquette
Please don’t hold up the entire shooting line looking for a lost arrow. It’s easy to get absorbed in the search and lose track of time. You should only search for a maximum of a couple of minutes each end. In short, you can keep searching until the last archer has finished scoring, and has pulled their arrows from the target. That’s when you need to stop searching, and try again at the next end.
“Alternative” Archery Facts
Don’t shoot with wooden arrows in a major competition on the same target as David Conran, especially if you’re shooting better than him. :-) Please don’t ask Terence “Hey! Why have I now only got 5.5 arrows?!” De Jong why. Remember, you can always say “No” to the question “Do you mind if I pull your arrows?” ⇝
Tip of the Week
🔫 Six Shooter 🔫
When shooting in an outdoor target competition, a good idea is to only have six arrows in your quiver. Take your spare arrows from your quiver and put them in or on the ground at the shooting line. This stops you from accidentally shooting more than six or forgetting to shoot all six, but still allows you to grab one in case you discover a problem with one of your arrows. Even elite archers have been known to lose count and shoot the wrong number of arrows.
Safety Tip
🏃💨 No running 🏃💨
As a child, you were told & learnt to never run with scissors; Arrows are just as bad. So don’t. Unlike scissors, arrows also like to embed themselves in targets at face height, and love pointing out of the ground at optimal angles for injury. That’s all before we get to tripping hazards etc. The sport of Target Archery is not a race, there is no need to run, jog, or even power walk. The DOS will always wait for you to get behind the line safely.
To quote a very experienced SQAS archer: “Take your time; Be quick about it!”.
