Club News
• Volunteer of the Week: Sandy Dunstan, for making up beautiful labels for our Come & Try classes, for being a regular Coaching Lane coach, arrow-repair regular, Come & Try instructor, and creator of our Bling Chest!! Thanks Sandy, for all that you do. 👏🎓😍
• AGM - If you are not able to attend the AGM, you can submit a Proxy Form. 📮🙋🗳
• The Titan Shed is now alarmed! Thanks to those involved. And thanks BCC for the grant! 🔐⏰
• It’s that time of year again as we start preparations for the next intake of Level 1 Coach training. If you’ll have been a member for over a year by February, and are interested in learning, improving your skills, & helping out the club massively, please let Rob (head coach) or someone on the committee know as we need to assist you in getting the pre-requists done. 🎓🏹
• We’ve purchased 120 new club arrows for the Hire Shed. The only problem is, they need to be built first. So, here is your chance to learn &/or help out making and repairing arrows. Practice on ours before you do yours! 🙋🙋
• We will be having our annual Sell & Swap Meet before the AGM. There will be lots and lots of club gear for sale, and auctioned off, including a sight, recurve bows, arrows, equipment bags, bow stands, … also, bring anything you want to sell off too. Bring your cash to purchase too. 💰💸
• Congratulations to our members who completed in the SQAS Matchplay Championships:
Amanda Ament🥇, Sanne Martini🥈, Ellen Martini🥈, Ruth Chamberlain🥉, Liezel Roux🥉, Chris Kerslake, Bronwyn Healing, Ben White, & Izach Parr

“Alternative” Archery Facts
Forecast for October: The Archery Gods™ will only be appeased by sacrifices of Brown Speckled Hens this month; As usual, Abbey Archery will be completely out of stock of them. Arrow lengths that are odd numbers will go left (barebow) & down (longbow); Even lengths will fly true, except for Compound, where they will favour the nine ring, except if the length is prime. Arrows with yellow nocks will at some point score the last 6 digits of the phone number of a pizza place you liked as a child.
Tip of the Week.
🪮♨ Don’t get too bent out of shape 🪮♨
Have you bent or wrinkled one of your plastic arrow vanes/fletches? The fix is really easy.
Plastic vanes/fletches are typically made from TPU. This stuff is fairly amazing. It can take a whole lot of wear and tear. It also has another trick up its sleeve, which is it remembers what shape it was moulded into. If you apply some low heat (think: steam, a hairdryer on low, or boiling water) it will try to go back to its original shape. With a little more help it will go back to being straight. Don’t try this trick with real feathers or spin-wings though.
Safety Tip
🔥😰 Heatstroke 🧊😳
With summer comes one of the more dangerous aliment Australian archers commonly face. It can strike when you least expect it. It doesn’t have to be the hottest day on record; you might have been fine last weekend when it was 3-5℃ hotter, but the situation could be slightly different this weekend. Contrary to popular thought, drinking cold drinks/water on hot days does not help. In fact it makes it far far worse. Ask me how I know! - David.
Symptoms: rapid pulse & fast, shallow breathing; trouble speaking, slurred speech; problems concentrating or coordinating movements; aggressive or strange behaviour; dizziness, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness; sudden rise in body temperature; hot and dry and possibly red skin, possibly with no sweat; dry, swollen tongue; headache, nausea or vomiting; intense thirst.
First Aid: Tell someone early if you have some of those symptoms. Get in the shade. Sit or lay down. Remove excess clothing. Small sips of cool (not cold) water. Sponging with water & fan the damp skin. Placing cold packs under their armpits or groin, or on the back of their neck. Call for/get medical attention. Under no circumstances do they drive themselves home.
Prevention: Drink plenty of water – even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid hot or sugary drinks; Keep cool – try to avoid direct sun. Wear a hat and lightweight, loose-fitting, cotton clothing. If it’s just too hot or humid, consider giving Archery a miss that day. No experienced archer will think less of you for saying “It’s too hot, I’d rather not.”
