Hi folks. I need some advice about leather repair. It's like this: a few
decades ago, I bought a woven chest from the Basket Man shop. It's about
the size of a cooler, and has leather handles (straps ~1" wide) at each
end. Since I bought it, I have regularly used these handles to haul it
about to & from events.

But this past weekend, while prepping for Panteria, after I had filled the
chest with the usual stuff I put in it, I went to pick it up, and one of
the handles broke: it tore apart crosswise, fairly cleanly, about 1/3 of
the way along its length -- i.e. a few inches away from the chest body. At
that point I didn't have time to think about fixing it, so I simply hauled
the chest about by picking it up from the bottom.

But now that the event is over & the chest is unpacked, I have time to
think. Does anyone have advice on how to repair this? In case it might be
relevant, I did notice, while unpacking, that the break appears to have
occurred at a place where something unknown dripped onto the leather.

Suggestions on how I might fix this, or recommendations of someone else who
can (I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount) would be welcome.

Thanks.

Can you post a picture? Without knowing how it’s attached and how it tore, it’s hard to say how it can be repaired.

While local folks will likely be able to give advice, it’s worth noting that the basketman gives a lifetime warranty on his items and if you bring it to pennsic or reach out to him, he will likely fix it for free.

Check someplace that does furniture repair. (Try Upholstery on
Broadway in East Arlington.)
If that doesn't pan out ... there's a luggage and shoe repair place on
Broadway in Somerville a couple of blocks from the Sullivan Square (T)
station.
No promises for either; but if they can't do it they might know someone
who can ....

Definitely check with Basket Man about a warranty repair, if you are going to Pennsic.
If you're not: Is there enough (an inch or more) strap securely attached to the basket before/after the break? That would be an easy fix -- come visit! PM me a photo...

Hi folks. I am grateful for the several useful suggestions you've made.
In particular, I have owned this chest so long that I had completely
forgotten the Basketman's lifetime guarantee. So I will look into that
first -- and if that doesn't pan out, I will check into the other ideas
people put forward. Thank you all very much.
