Dear Blackhawk Families,
We have lots to share with you this week!
As you've probably heard, Santa Fe Public Schools will start the 2020-21 school year in a fully remote model on August 20th for 1st through 12th grades.
Kindergartners will start on August 24th. Their teachers will reach out to schedule online Kinder-Kickoff meetings with each family beginning August 20.
Please know that we would love to be back at Carlos Gilbert teaching your children in person, but until that happens, we are committed to making our remote learning a rigorous and engaging experience for all students.
Here are some changes and important information you need to know for the beginning of this upcoming school year:
Teaching/Curricula/Online platforms
- Teachers will provide more synchronous (teacher and students together) learning experiences.
- Teachers will cover all grade-level standards including ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science.
- We are using new English Language Arts (ELA) and Math curricula that have many online resources built right in.
- We are using the SeeSaw platform for younger grades and Open Access for older grades.
Scheduling and Supplies
- All Specials will be offered weekly. Schedules under development.
- Wednesdays - We are still finalizing our weekly/daily schedules, but at this time the district has designated Wednesday for small group interventions and enrichment for students with IEP's, and for English Language Learners. Whole-class instruction will most likely not occur on Wednesdays during remote learning.
- We are organizing days and times for students to drive by and pick up spring pictures, yearbooks, and instructional material closer to the beginning of school. If there is a very important personal item in the building, this may be picked up at that same time in small groups of 5. However, unless this is a really important item, we would prefer students wait to retrieve belongings until we transition into the hybrid model. More detailed information about this is forthcoming.
- School supplies - Only basic supplies are needed at this time: paper, pencils, crayons, scissors, and a screen cleaner. Teachers will let you know if additional items are needed.
Technology - Chromebooks, tablets, etc.
- If you are new to Santa Fe Public Schools or need a new device, you should be contacted by our technology department within the next two weeks to schedule a pick-up time for a device. This includes 1st graders going into 2nd who will need to return their iPad and check out a Chromebook.
- Tech check - An audio message went out last Saturday about students' tech devices. They asked families to power on their SFPS-provided devices to make sure that: they work, they can connect to the internet, the username and password works for One Login, and that the device can access Gmail and the Open Access dashboard. Listen to the message here.
- For help with student technology devices: Call 505-467-HELP (4357) or email - student...@sfps.k12.nm.us
The school district has put together a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions document which may answer additional questions. The district has also asked families to complete a survey by Monday, August 3.
Ok! That's it for now. We look forward to meeting our new students and seeing our returning students soon! You'll be hearing from us :)
