Today I was trying to access old footage and noticed I can only go back to May 1st at 6am on all my cameras. I was curious if the hard drive was full, so I checked the storage setting.

It's set to retain footage until there's no space, but the storage menu shows 130Gb free. My Camect has been running for months, so my question is why I can only go back to May 1st if the Camect has been running since before that and there's still free space.

I suspect this is to have process overhead for read/write. You don't ever want to completely fill a drive because it degrades performance. Mine sits between 50 and 100 GB free as well from what I remember, currently sitting at 53.7 GB free.

The usual recommendation I remember seeing around is you want 10% or more free because it allows file writes without as much fragmentation which slows things down. That has to do with operating system fragmentation handling though so I'm not positive it applies here in the same way.

Fragmentation shouldn't be an issue since the drive is an SSD.

I did notice another quirk recently where the unit was filling up the drive more, closer to only 50GB free. Then the next day when I checked, it had jumped back to over 100GB free. I'm wondering how the unit saves the files for each camera and what the max file size is for each clip. If the unit allows for very large clip files, then it's possible that when the unit needs to free up space it has to delete a large file which means a larger chunk of time.

@Camect team - any thoughts on this?

The video storage drive is not SSD.

Thanks, Will. That makes a lot more sense, but I could've sworn I saw someone say it was an SSD somewhere. I'm sure I misread or misremembered.

That's an easier solve for me anyway. I'll just get a standard 2.5" drive larger than 1TB to give me the footage retention time I want.

You might consider just plugging in a external USB3 drive. I found that very cost effective for both of my Camect boxes.
