I have a jivetech camera that shows "unable to connect"
from my basic readings it should be able to be used.
the camera is brand new out of a box... default user/pw is admin/admin

I see there are notes on the camect website that read:
IP Cameras: Cameras that support Onvif or RTSP will work. There are hundreds of compatible models.

  • IP cameras from these popular brands WILL work: Amcrest, Axis, Dahua, Foscam, Hikvision, Reolink (non-Argus), Trivision, Vstarcam (but read the brand-specific notes). Many others will work too!
  • IP cameras have a network cable running to them or connect to Wi-Fi – and they support RTSP.
  • Cameras that support Onvif will be detected automatically.
  • Cameras that only support RTSP will work, but you may have to configure the correct RTSP url for each camera in Camect.

but no info on how to configure the RTSP (whatever the heck that is) for this camera.

can someone give me a quick how to about this?

What model of Jidetech camera do you have? Assuming that it clams to support RTSP, it sounds like it uses a less-common RTSP url so your Camect device can't guess it automatically, and that it doesn't support Onvif or it would have been able to tell Camect what the correct url is.

The high-level overview for what to do if your cameras don't come up is here

In your specific case, you'll need to figure out the RTSP url that applies to your camera model -- you may be able to find it by Google search, on a page like this one, or by asking in the manufacturer's support forum.  Once you know the RTSP url, of your camera, you can add the camera manually ...
home settings (cog wheel at top) > devices > add camera   ... set the type to "Stream URL" and enter the RTSP url.

You can also use the VLC app (available from videolan.org) to fetch video from an RTSP url ... This may be a quicker way of testing than plugging things into Camect. If you get an RTSP url that works with VLC it should also work in Camect.

Okay,  your camera did tell Camect its RTSP url .... The one you have is not something Camect would have guessed.

Based on a question and answer about your model that I see on  this page it sounds like your camera is set to use h.265 encoding by default and whereas the url sounds like it's intended for use with h264 encoding.  Go into the settings of your camera  from a web browser  and see if you can switch the camera to using h.264 instead.  (On that page, another person reports that this fixed the issue when trying to use this camera with Zoneminder.)

P.S. After changing the setting, you may need need to disable and enable the camera with the error in the Camect UI to get it to try the connection again.  (Slider at top left of the camera title to disable. Then click "show XX disabled cameras below the display of cameras, and re-enable the camera.)

It also is saying 640x480 you might want to see if you can set the RTSP stream to a higher resolution.

Sorry for the delay, I managed to connect to the camera by forcing my laptop to the same ip range as the camera.
This is def not beginner stuff and getting through this with a FAQ would be useful.

Once connected, I switched to h.264 ( I have no idea what that means) but it now is working.
