Below you can see some of the events happening in Cambridge this week and early in October. Sign up for a CFL swap out in the Porter Square area of North Cambridge and reduce tons of carbon emissions as part of 350.org 10/10/2010 events and learn about some other wonderful ways to get involved in the community.  We hope to see you there!

North Cambridge CFL distribution 


WHEN: October 10, 2010, 1- 5:30pm

WHERE: Meet at 175 Richdale Avenue (map)

Please sign up for this event!

We will be cutting carbon by replacing incandescent lightbulbs with Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs, saving over 70% on electricity usage and fossil fuel burned. This will be done in conjunction with all the other 10/10/10 events organized by 350.org. Arrive & train from 1-2  and distribute from 2 to 4:30, Light refreshments & debriefing from 4:30 to 5, potluck dinner at 5:00pm (so bring a dish if you'd like to!).

WHAT: A dynamic and inspiring presentation by Laura Kischitz of Sustainable Life Solutions, detailing ways to consume less, live green, and save money- Moderated by the CEA.
             **The presentation is followed by the opportunity for community members to purchase energy-saving and toxin-reducing products.

Hello again, CEA friends!

Here is the update mentioned in the previous reminder: In this email you can read about some of the events happening in Cambridge this week and through the beginning of November.

Please Sign up for our 10/10/10 CFL swap out in the Porter Square area of North Cambridge and reduce tons of carbon emissions as part of 350.org 10/10/2010 events, learn about some other wonderful ways to get involved in the community, and enjoy an afternoon of camaraderie. (more details below)

Other events coming up include the "Green Tupperware Party" on October 17th, a Going Green Info Session as part of Networking Wednesdays on November 3rd, a HEET weatherization barn-raising on November 6th, and another film showing (the fifth in the series) on November 10th. Also in the works is a workshop on how to communicate better with climate change skeptics- this is projected to be held at the Main Library in mid November.

Tomorrow Evening: Stretch Code Workshop

WHEN: Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 6:00pm
WHERE: Main Library Lecture Hall (Lower level, L2 in elevator), 449 Broadway, Cambridge

WHAT: A workshop on the Stretch Energy Code for Residential Projects
            The panel includes Caitriona Cooke and Michael Schofield of Conservation Services Group, the state’s residential energy code training contractor, and Ranjit Singanayagam, Cambridge Commissioner of Inspectional Services.

This is a good opportunity to find out how the Stretch Energy Code, which went into effect on July 1, 2010, affects residential new construction and renovation projects, and to get your questions answered.  The workshop is aimed at homeowners and contractors.

The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

"When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens."
