Dear CEA friends,

In this email we have a few news stories to point out, an exciting, long-coming announcement, a few updates to share, and a couple of resources to reveal in addition to the usual posting of upcoming Cambridge events!

National news- Vice President Joe Biden has teamed with the Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu to announce the launch of the Home Energy Score pilot program. This pilot program will include building scoring, comparisons to regional neighbors, as well as cost-effective suggestions for energy efficiency improvements. Please read the full story here. In addition, on November 12th the DOE announced a new committee to advise Secretary Chu on the matter of energy efficiency, titled the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Advisory Committee. Members of this committee include two representatives from MIT as well as the Massachusetts DOE's commissioner, Philip Giudice.

Cambridge News- The news that the regular annual parking fee in Cambridge will be raised from $8 to $20 next year and to $25 in 2012 has been circulating for a short while. What you may not know is that in addition to these increases aiming to be an incentive for drivers to favor more enviro-friendly means of travel, the new funds collected will be used in Cambridge's continued efforts to become a more sustainable community.

CEA Partners News- Some great news for independent businesses in Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston: The Sustainable Business Leader Program (SBLP) has been able to lower the fee for business participation significantly, due to the 2010 Community Climate Action and Air Quality Grant. "SBLP is one of the most comprehensive and fastest-growing programs in the nation designed specifically to “green” locally-owned businesses and to reduce their carbon emissions." Right now is a fantastic time for you to take advantage of lower costs and work with this organization to achieve a higher level of sustainability for your business.

For more local and national sustainability and energy-related news, I encourage you to visit our blog. If you already follow our blog casually, I would suggest following us on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/CambEnergy so that each time we post an update you can be the first to know!

Now, for the announcement we have waited several weeks to make! Many of the community members reading this knew personally CEA's previous Outreach Director, Lilah Glick. We would like to introduce you to her wonderful successor, who many of you have now met at community meetings or events, and whom we have had the pleasure of working with for the last several weeks. Meghan Shaw comes to CEA with a fresh outlook and much skill and experience to aid in making CEA the best community resource that it can be. We are very excited to have Ms. Shaw on board, and encourage all of you to read more about her on our website at http://cambridgeenergyalliance.org/about/team/staff

It's the time of year when things begin to slow down a bit as we begin to gather with family and friends, but Cambridge has still got events for you to look forward to!

Events coming up include a CFL exchange canvass in Mid-Cambridge on Saturday, December 4th, November's Walk/Ride day on this Friday, November 26th, and a re-grouping of the Cambridge Climate Emergency Forum on the evening of Tuesday November 30th.

Please take a moment to view the event descriptions below, and consider joining us for one or more of them!

Best Wishes,

Jesse Gorden

Updates: In case you missed it
Weatherization Barnraising
So many volunteers signed up for the November 6th HEET barnraising that CEA performed an impromptu CFL exchange canvass in that area. There's a much bigger CFL event for you to attend on Dec 4th (see description above).

Being Persuasive about Climate Change (skills for Thanksgiving dinner)
For those who weren't able to make it to this HEET/CEA event with Larry Susskind from the Consensus Institute, you may read the notes here. The event was video-recorded as well, and HEET will try to post this footage soon.

Power of Community
The first showing of Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil was a successful event- the post-film discussion transcended borders in a way that the most significant conversations often do. Because of the wonderful reception to the film, we aim to have another showing in the near future. Keep your eyes out for a new announcement if you were unable to attend the first showing. Please feel free to email and let us know if this is a film you haven't been able to see yet but would like to catch (we've heard this from many folks already)!

Resources

Energy efficient lighting Apps for smart phones.
Light Bulb Finder App – A new app for Android smart phones that helps select appropriate energy efficient lighting.  The iPhone ap is coming.

Communities of Faith, Houses of Worship!

Take the Noah Challenge- http://www.mipandl.org/

We recently discovered a great rallying point for communities of faith to take action as environmental stewards: Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light (MIP&L) has dared community members to take the Noah Challenge, comparing the actions that Noah took to the comparatively easy energy efficiency ones that can be taken today. MIP&L shares success stories, and supplies other resources as well- all in the name of protecting Creation.
