2011 Kickoff Meeting and Pizza Party

CEA is excited to offer seven new part-time volunteer intern positions for people who are passionate about energy, the environment, and want to make a difference locally! These different positions are varied, so we are looking for inquisitive minds, media/communication gurus, artists, techies, and folks with great people skills who like working with adults, or with children*. This is an opportunity for you to gain valuable experience while making a visible impact on the Cambridge community and building your resume. Please see the position descriptions attached to this email, because we’d love to have you!

 

To get everyone started on our 2011 plans, we will be having a new year volunteer bash this week, so if you are interested in volunteering we’ll look forward to seeing you at CEA THIS Wednesday (Jan 12) at 7:00pm for a pizza party.

YWCA Many Helping Hands CFL Exchange

Continuing Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream with a Day of Service

The YWCA at 7 Temple St, Central Square, Cambridge

 

CEA will be present at Many Helping Hands’ wonderful event that aims to “answer Dr. King’s challenge to do something for others.” We will be distributing CFL light bulbs in exchange for plays at our Energy Efficiency game. HEET Weatherization Barn-raising

National

• The U.S. Department of Energy will be supporting updated, energy-efficient building codes in 24 states (Including MA). Read the full story here.

 

• The Swedish home furnishings retail giant IKEA has stopped selling incandescent light bulbs in this country– this is supposed to be done by all U.S. retailers, with a deadline of 2012-14 as was written in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

 

Massachusetts

• Massachusetts issued a new Energy and Climate Plan for 2020, setting a greenhouse gas emissions goal of 25% below 1990 levels by 2020, effectively reaching the ceiling on emissions standards allowed by the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2008.

 

• The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) is soliciting public comment on a proposed MPG-like building rating pilot for commercial buildings. There will be a public meeting on January 18th in Boston, and a webinar on January 20th. Please visit this link for more information.

Job Opportunity

 

Project Manager

MIT Energy Initiative

Cambridge MA       

Full Time

 

PROJECT MANAGER, MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and Department of Economics, to manage a large research project on home energy weatherization. The overall project involves partnering with electric and natural gas utilities that run weatherization programs, implementing randomized experiments to test what financial incentives and program modifications increase adoption of energy efficiency investments, and measuring the effects of these investments on energy usage. Responsibilities will include overseeing the implementation of the project by MITEI's partners by ensuring that field staff adheres to the project design, and overseeing a large data collection effort which includes combining utility bills with demographic information and administrative data from energy efficiency programs. In general, will be responsible for making decisions on how to implement a project that meets rigorous scientific standards while remaining feasible for the partners. For example, some project designs would be scientifically interesting but too costly or difficult for the partner company to implement, so we would need to understand the partner company's capabilities and make appropriate tradeoffs.

 

REQUIREMENTS: a bachelor's degree in economics, statistics, engineering, or related field and/or a master's degree in economics or public administration/international development with an interest in and some knowledge of the energy industry and energy efficiency programs. An interest in scientific research, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in nonacademic business settings required. This ability should be evidenced by two years of experience in finance or some other private sector job. There may be some travel to research sites in different parts of the United States. This is an eighteen-month appointment.
