Posting on behalf of moderator Susie Cordell:
Attendees for this session:
Tim Anderson, EBU
Chris Champion, Power Ratings
Stefan Skorchev, Bridge Cloud
Susie Cordell, ACBL
Key points from this meeting:
- Points (Global and/or Masterpoints® are different from Grading
- Points are rewards and incentives – and have a commercial function
- Grading (Strength of Field) attempts to help assess performance for stratification, handicapping games and ensuring that players are playing against like level players
- EBU currently has two systems
- Masterpoints
- National grading system
- ACBL has Masterpoints®
- Leverage Chris Champion’s Power Ratings
- Other systems are being created by others to compete with that
- Both Tim & Chris showed and shared the systems being utilized for rankings
- Tim expressed concern that there is inherent issues with the grading schema’s because they are not accurate if compared with people who never play agains each other
- Both agreed that it is a mistake to ADD grading system to the ranking system
- Mathematics are difficult for cross pollination.
- Skewed results if players are not close to each other
- Next steps:
- Find someone to collate all the systems currently being used across the world for both pointing and for rankings
- Have subsequent meetings to discuss
- Get more games (on-line) into systems to evaluate viability, risks, issues
- Look outside of Bridge for rankings systems to ensure that there is objectivity in how built
- Risks
- Collaboration
- Privacy
- Fairness
