The current notifications work sort of like a who-streamed-since-I-logged-out list (unless you use desktop notifications, too). Let's fix this.

[bitwave.tv] needs notifications to be _better_. It also needs a place to put longer site-wide announcements (something that will be up for days,
not the current 30 second ticker). And, we can decide if there should be a place for missed @mentions and whispers, or even a separate DM system
piggy-backing whispers.

What can also tie in nicely is a ticket system. Let me explain:

I propose two notification buttons:

  • one that shows up only on site-wide announcements (i.e. a new 'Working Topic' or RFC proposal gets posted here)
  • the other is a tabbed view of 'regular' notifications

In these 'regular' notifications, you'd have several tabs: stream notifications, missed @mentions, and replies to your ticket(s).

Support tickets would be submitted through a form, and get tied somehow to you (tricky if you consider troll accounts). The mod replying to your ticket
can either send back a reply, or start/stop a live chat with you.

Basically, whispers between regular users would act like direct messages, and you could use a separate UI for them (though /w would still work).
Whispers from a (((poweruser))) and a regular user can be normal direct messages, or special (((moderator))) messages.
This would facilitate both ticket replies and mod->user communication.

Another place for sitewide announcements is a collapsible blotter, like you see on imageboards.

Bottom line is that we need a place for announcements (either blotters, or blotters leading to a special page, or it happening in notifications). If we can
fit it together with a DM system, great, but we don't have to even have direct messages.

as for whispers never save them. have them delete after each notification from the same user.

(something like.) blob messages blobby, blobby gets a notification that shows the message, blob sends another, blobby only see the second message in his notifications, but blobby can still see both of
 the messages in chat.

my main worry is clutter and bloat. keep it simple.
