Hi, Martyna,

What times will the course be on Saturdays and Sundays? Just want to make sure kids can actually work at those times.

Will the course start in November?

Best,

Huayu

Hey, I am interested in joining the study group

But I was wondering if the resgistration is ended.

Also, is it only for beginners or those who already read Campbell biology and just need to solve practice problems are allowed as well?

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Junwoo P

@Anne, yes, all classes are recorded so the students who cannot attend the class will still be able to catch up with the course.

@JunWoo  the registration is ongoing and you can register at any time. Whenever we gather a group of 5-6 students, we start the cycle of the course.

Best wishes,

Dear all,

We are now collecting the group for the Introductory Biology Olympiad Training Camp and we are planning on starting it on Saturday, 24 October. The Introductory Training Camp is designed for anyone who hasn't read Campbell Biology. It's aimed at 8th, 9th and 10th graders.

Our tutors include USABO semifinalists, IBO medalists, and winners of the British Biology Olympiad as well as PhD and MSc students from leading universities from around the world. You can read their profiles here.

The curriculum is below:

Screenshot 2020-10-11 at 13.56.51.png
Screenshot 2020-10-11 at 13.55.57.png
All students will get access to the learning platform with weekly reading assignments, handouts, presentations and all recordings of previous classes.

The registration for group 1 ends on Tuesday, 20 October.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Hi! This is great! Will u have one for later in the yr or 2021? We are so inundated! Does this prep for the actual exam?

Also how is this compared to the questions and crash course on your site? Thanks!

Hi Dana,

I answered your questions below. ;-)))

Will u have one for later in the yr or 2021?

Yes, the camps are organized on a rolling basis. Whenever we get at least 5 students registered, we start the camp. So you can apply at any time, just in the Google form please indicate the dates from when you can join.

Does this prep for the actual exam?

The Introductory Biology olympiad Training Camp helps you build a solid foundation of biology knowledge which is crucial for the USABO. It doesn't guarantee that you will succeed in the USABO. However, this should help you pass the Open exam! To pass semifinals we have created the Advanced USABO Training Camp which focuses on advanced knowledge required. In addition, in winter we will run a USABO Problem Solving Training camp which will NOT focus on theory, but will only involve solving past paper questions and also some other olympiad questions to help you gain skills in critical and analytical thinking.

Also how is this compared to the questions and crash course on your site?

In the two above mentioned camps we help students absorb theory which is pretty hard if you do this on your own. Given that biology is so extensive and since for the biology olympiad you need to learn stuff taught at the undergraduate level, having a particular curriculum and an experienced tutor may help you learn and remember information faster. In this way, you don't need to spend as much time and effort on learning compared to individual learning.

The practice problems in our camps are mainly designed to test your knowledge, although we also added problem solving questions in weekly quizzes. So for the best results, I would combine the training camp with the questions on the website.

The Crash course that we have is super intensive and can be used any time. Note, however, in the camps and the crash course we use the same presentations. So what's the difference? Let me compare the two options:

Video crash course
- Self-paced
- You can watch videos at any time, no need to wait for a weekly class so you can absorb the material in less time
- No interaction with the tutor
- May be less interesting as the student is studying alone so he/she may become less motivated
- No quizzes, no handouts, just theory and videos
- Better option for introverts or those who don't like other students being in the class ;-)

Intensive USABO preparation group class
- Less attention to individual students
- Takes more time to cover the material (part 1 - 12 weeks, part 2 - 14 weeks)
- A good opportunity to make new friends (we also have a Skype group where we share fun biology jokes, resources and our experiences)
- May help keep your motivation up
- You have an opportunity to meet more diverse tutors and experience more different teaching styles which may keep the student engaged in the biolympiad journey
- Handouts and weekly quizzes are provided.

Hope that answers your questions. ;-)

Best wishes,
Martyna Petrulyte, BSc (Hons)
