Hi all,

I am an 8th grader who will be going into 9th grade next fall and I have also just found the USABO to be something that I wish to pursue in highschool.

I have done a little bit of research online and have also started studying Reece and Campbell's Biology.

Are there any tips for someone like me to reach semifinals by senior year? or have I started too late?

Thanks

You can definitely make semifinals by senior year.  The key to making semifinals is having a thorough knowledge of Campbell's.  This step is extremely important; just skimming through Campbell's will NOT be enough to make semifinals.  Once you've read the book thoroughly and made note of all the important pictures as well as generalizations, it is advisable to start working on past exams.

If you complete Campbell thoroughly by next February, you’ll probably make semis, maybe some more reading of other textbooks but that should be it. You haven’t started too late to make finals, much less semifinals.

Hey! When to start for competing in IBO 2018-19?
What set of books are to be used, other than campbell??

You can make semifinals freshman year, just read Campbells Biology. I've started reading it and i've been getting most of the questions on open exams. It almost feels like the open exam questions are pulled directly from Campbell so its pretty straightforward from there.

You can definitely make semis, maybe even next year as a freshman! I only heard about the USABO november of last year, and I managed to make it with 4 months of studying. I read through campbells twice and did lots of practice tests. Make sure you know all the details in campbell (including stuff in the captions of diagrams), not just the main ideas.

If I could go back and do things differently I would spend more time doing practice problems instead of just reading the textbook
