Revised State Budget Underfunds Active Transportation

Governor Gavin Newsom’s revised proposal for the state’s July 2022-June 2023 budget includes $1.1 billion in new money for active transportation. CalBike applauds the governor for allocating the increased funding. Thanks to pressure from bike advocates like you, we are more than halfway to our goal of $2 Billion for Bikes in California’s 2022-23 budget.

However, $1.1 billion isn’t enough. In a state ravaged by climate change, we must do better. We need $2 Billion for Bikes.

Victory for Bike-Friendly Bills in Sacramento

Last week, eight bike-friendly bills had hearings in the Assembly Appropriations Committee, where bills are often killed. All but two of them made it out of committee and are now headed for a floor vote.

Every bill must move from its house of origin by May 27, so we expect votes on many crucial bike-friendly bills this week. See the next item for an action you can take to support legislation for safer streets.

Tell the Assembly to Vote YES for the Freedom to Walk

The Freedom to Walk Bill will end unnecessary jaywalking tickets that are often used to harass Black and brown Californians. It's now poised for a vote in the Assembly. Please email your assemblymember and tell them to vote YES for the freedom to walk

The Road to Helsinki Is a Bike Path

The Finnish Cycling Embassy is offering a three-day urbanism course in Helsinki, "the most functional city." The trip may include a visit to Oulo, the winter cycling capital of the world. The course runs August 15-17, 2022, and tuition is 1,000€ (the exchange rate is very good right now). We'd love to see a big delegation from California that includes elected officials and planners who can bring back ideas to transform our cities. If you'd like to attend or want more information, email anthony...@cyclingembassy.fi.

Bike the Vote in the June Primary

The June primary ends June 6, and you should already have your mail-in ballot. California's nonpartisan primary system means that the top two candidates in June will be on the November ballot, regardless of party. Please vote in the primary. Electing bike-friendly leaders is one of the best ways to achieve safer streets.

CalBike has endorsed nine bike-friendly leaders with tough races. Check out CalBike's endorsements and return your ballot by mail or drop box or vote in person by June 6.
