Note that City Staff will be with us on this one to talk about the project and take our questions, etc.
Cheers,

I biked on California street Friday with my wife and it was great! Not sure I'll be able to make the Sunday ride.

Some parts of the bike lane on California need to be swept of leaves - wet slippery leaves are pretty treacherous.

And there was a dumpster blocking the lane in one spot.

Thanks, Tim. Yes, neither of those situations are good and they call for correction! Leaf cleanup has been discussed along the way, but I haven't heard anything new on this for a while.
Perhaps dumpsters could go into the lined box areas if needed? Maybe not ideal, but perhaps at least better. Karen/Hoa (in bcc), could you address these in your talking points during tomorrow's ride?
Cheers,
Bruce

1. Leaves.  I have seen the City make an effort to clear the lanes of fallen leaves.  But when I rode Cal. St. last Friday, there were a lot of fresh new leaves that had just fallen, so conditions were worse than they had been.  I know that this is a serious safety issue for older riders.  My father (mid/late 70s) has had two serious crashes from riding on wet leaves.

2. Dumpsters.  If any of you follow the “Bike lane blockers of San Jose” FB group, dumpster blocking has been a reoccurring issue there too.  SJ cyclists have been engaged with City of San Jose for a while to talk about solutions.  Latest idea was to put stickers on the dumpsters asking people to not put them in the bike lane.  From what I’ve seen in San Jose, the best solution has been where there is a physical back stop that prevents the dumpster from rolling back into the bike lane.

On a related note, I often encounter toters in bike lanes (albeit usually to the sides) that are very hard to see at night. I can be practically right on top of them before I see them. In my view, they ought to have reflective tape or stickers on them, at least when they are going to be in locations such as this. Particularly hazardous when on their sides and splayed out into the bike lane. I'll do an AskMV ticket on this.
Cheers,
Bruce
