Panaracer Gravel king in 20*2.1

Someone posted this earlier today on the facebook group - 

Blue lug blogged about a 20" gravel king tyre from panaracer here.

Seems to be on sale already in two colours - here and here. Limited to 2.1", so I guess restricted to the Llama's, the All-packa, and maybe the disc-NWT.

This is great. I find that 2.1 is the max my nwt will fit without being too close for comfort with the rear mech and the tire.

Here is the Panaracer spec-page for the 406mm X1 tire.

When I saw the title, I was hoping they had created a 406mm version of the Gravelking 'Slick'. But they've created a blocky-knoby. It appears to be shaped to a round profile (which is nice), but there's still a lot of rubber. It comes in 100g more than the 60tpi 2.1-inch version of the Tioga PowerBlock. I'm really curious to see how it behaves. But I already have so many 406mm tires on the wall, that I can't really see buying a set right now.

On the up side, it does claim to be tubeless compatible. As far as I know, there hasn't been a tubeless 406mm tire since Schwalbe discontinued their HS-434 'Shredda'.

The "competition" here would be the Schwalbe G-One Allround, which is also a tubeless compatible 2.1" with a bit of small knobs. It's pretty impressive and I'm sure the Gravel King X1 will be similar.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I’m going to anyway ... this is still about tires!

If you are looking for a wider 451 tire, I can recommend the Tioga Fastr-X.  Really nice ride, but they were also very hard to find in the more-supple Kevlar bead version.  They are nominally 20 x 1⅜” and come in a bit wider than the Primo Comet 1⅜” width on the same rims. (The photos show them on Velocity A23 rims; Tioga says to use a rim with 16mm internal width or more.)

I’m selling a single mounted-but-not-ridden wire-bead edition, and a pair of lightly-ridden tires (maybe 300 miles?) in the folding edition.  I was running them on my Air Friday, with fenders (aka mudguards).  

So, why am I selling them?  I’ve decided that the clearances are a bit too close for comfort.  Make your own decision here.  With Disk brakes, or V-brakes I think that they would be just fine; the narrowest clearance on my bike was under the brake caliper.

They’ve always been hard to find on Schwalbe’s website. A customer first pointed them out to me and I looked and couldn’t find them. Then he sent a direct link. 

Unfortunately, that doesn’t work anymore. Given Brompton’s singular usage of that tire, I doubt it’s going away. Probably just in the middle of updating for the new year.

$66 from BF is a great price for the Schwalbe G-One All Around 20"x2.1". They can also be ordered from REI at $82.50  (free shipping) with 10% back in rewards for REI members.

They are difficult to find using the name on the side wall. REI has them listed as "G One Tire for G Line."  But if you search for Schwalbe G Line and Brompton, you start to get lots of hits.

They are 54-406, foldable, and tubless compatible.

How does this Schwalbe G-One compare to the Schwalbe Billy Bonkers? The tread looks similar. Walter, do you have any insights on this?  I have the Billy Bonkers on my All-Day and find them to be a very comfortable supple tire. I have thought about getting some for my NWT, but perhaps I should look at the G-One tires instead?

I'm sure they'd work out well on tandem Tuesday.  Our Schwalbe Big Apple 2.0 tires are great on pavement and flat surfaces, but we have had some sideways sliding on gravel, crowned roads on a few bike tours of Europe.  The Panaracers look like a tire to consider in the future as replacements for off road riding.

I did manage to get in touch with Panaracer and they sent us some samples of the Gravel Kings. They're not quite yet available in the US yet (and thus not on the Panaracer USA site), but they are now on Panaracer's global website:

They are uncanny: fast, supple, smooth, and they just eat up gravel like no one's business. I kind of agree with Clint at Blue Lug: they're the best riding 20" tire I've experienced.

How do you think these tires would be on a 2sday? There is room for them on the fork and frame. What's your impression of them on pavement? Could I run them at 65 psi? We do 50/50 on/off road riding and are always looking for something that handles the off-road well. Our Big Apples are OK, put on crowned, off road situations I can feel some sideways slippage. I would run a higher psi level for fully loaded touring.

Bike Friday Newbie here. I assume there's plenty of clearance for a 2.1" Gravelking on a Pocket Nomad/NWT, since 2.4" tires are mentioned for the NWT in the table on this page? Probably be light bulb shaped on the stock rims but that's not a big deal to me.

If the bike has discs, most likely. They’re surprisingly fast on pavement. Max psi is 50. I’m not confident they would be ideal for a tandem, though.

That chart is a little confusing. It’s right at the limit of a NWT, but really will only work well with disc brakes on that model.

Hi Walter,

On your instagram post, how did you attach the basket to your all-packa? I want to put a basket on my All-day, hoping to attach it to the mounting bolts on the front that will also accept a Brompton mount. Did you have a small rack underneath to support the basket, in addition to the attachment down to the fork mounts? Thanks for any hints you can give me on this. Sorry to change the subject here!

That's a Wald 1372 basket. I'm not sure other larger baskets would work. To be frank, I'm not sure that this will work the same with the All-Day fold because it's a little bit different, but I'm optimistic given that I know it works with big fat tires on the All-Packa.

If you look at the webpage at the disassembled pictures, you can see there are these little tabs on the underside of the basket with holes in them. They are supposed to work with the included stays. Instead, I've got some normal rack stays from some unknown rack. They're attached to the fork's front rack braze on.

The tricky part is the upper connection. Those rack stays are slotted. A pair of them were cut down to approximately 3" long segments. Each segment goes on either side of the back of the basket, sandwiching it with a set of nuts and bolts. Then this whole unit is bolted to the accessory mount on the front of the headset preload clamp (see here).

This was all originally concocted by Willie Hatfield, who originally designed the All-Packa. He moved on to other things (notably mounting an enormous bear-proof container in the same general vicinity), but I loved the basket and grabbed it from him when he got rid of it. I've used it ever since and been really happy with it.

My pakiT has a front rack on it that is more or less the same thing: a cargo carrying solution that holds the load just above the front wheel. In both cases, I've found it very practical.

Yeah, I doubt it. Rim brakes are going the way of the dinosaur. Also, the industry as a whole is going wider and wider. 45mm is on the low end of the spectrum for a typical gravel bike.

Options: buy a new frame with disc mounts, or at least a new fork and rear end.

Hi Walter, I have a Wald basket like yours, but it came without any mounts. Looks like I'll need to get creative to figure something out. I have a front rack on my All-Day right now, but I don't think it will fold with it. My hope is to take the rack off and mount a small rack to the Brompton mount bolts (that I paid extra for), then put fork mounts on the forks. My All-Day is actually challenging to fold because the bolt on my Shimano 8-speed hub seems to hit the bolt of the front tire perfectly, which is not so nice. I think it's just one disadvantage of having a 50 cm frame. My All-Packa on the other hand, folds well, even with a Old Man Mountain front rack with a basket on it. I did see a small front rack made by Tern that looks like it could mount to the front bolts on the All-Day, but there's no measurement for the bolt spacing and the Tern web page doesn't seem to provide any way to contact them. Very inconvenient! REI is our only Tern dealer in town and they have such a limited selection of Tern bicycles and accessories, they probably won't know anything about this particular rack. Guess that's why I bought Bike Fridays instead of Terns, even though  I know they are also very good bikes.

I have a Tern P-20 so double chain rings in the front. It's a real work horse. And I have two Bike Fridays with 46-48 frame, the smallest they make. Has anyone considered a Retrospect front basket? They hook onto the handlebars. They would probably be removed for folding but might be an alternative.

Since I didn't get to Kristi's post before this one came in, I'll reply to both here.

First, Nina: I'm not a fan of putting weight up high in the front. The lower the better. I've seen lots of folks put massive amounts of stuff in handlebar bags, but I'm just not a fan. For people that sit really upright, that makes it even worse. That said, I've seen quick release baskets used before (KlickFix has a whole range of such things) with success if you don't load them up too heavy. For what it's worth, I'd say there's much less of a concern if the load isn't moving when turning, i.e. if you've got it mounted on the headtube, as you would if you used a Brompton mount (which Kristi had mentioned on her bike). The cargo bikes we offer also have this feature (although it's a different mounting pattern).

Finally, Kristi: 

• The All-Day has a known interference with the front rack when folding, so your suspicion is correct. It works fine when it's unfolded, though!
• Regarding the fold, I haven't heard that particular problem before. I would urge you to get pictures of the interference and send it to ser...@bikefriday.com. I'm confident we can figure out some sort of solution.
• Tern has come up with several different head tube mounting systems, none of which are compatible with one another or with anyone else.
• There are a bunch of alternative solutions for the Brompton mount rather than the typical bags you see. Litepro offers what essentially amounts to the internal frame of the bags, to which you could attach anything. Perhaps more exciting is the Nitto rack, though.
• One solution for the basket is to do something similar to what you're doing on the All-Packa: mount a front rack and then mount the basket to the rack. I don't love this solution as much as it's naturally heavier but, by contrast, it should also increase the weight capacity. Using a porteur style rack is probably the most elegant way to go. This is something that Bike Friday Tokyo/Blue Lug have done several times as you can see on this Diamond Llama. You could also use the aforementioned Nitto rack as you can see done on this New World Tourist with an even larger Wald basket.

Just want to use this discussion, to once again plug and encourage more Bike Friday use of its own Enlightenmount over the Brompton mount. 

Here's a few pictures of my Llama with the Enligthenmount Rack and Plate and a wald basket attached to it (there's also a BF-specific basket). Everything on the head tube, so wonderfully balanced and off the fork or stem. Doesn't stop the fold, though you are left with the rack standing out like a table as you can see in one of the pictures. And of course the mount is compatible with brompton bags (via the Litepro adapter) and klickfix mounts used by Tern and Dahon.

I've taken to adding a few spots of sew up tire glue to  one side's   tire bead   so [rear] tire does not shift around the rim 

tubes tend to stick to inside of tire (talc helps reduce that)   stem goes with tire   hole in rim does Not.. 

 then the shear forces tear a leak @ base of stem...

Yea there are Hang off the handlebars baskets   some have a U shaped brace on most bikes it rests against the head tube....

Klick Fix Bar bag mounts8*   clamp on handlebars   they have other mounts for vertical tubes

*Ortlieb #6 bar bag mounts aredinaslly cross compatible Klick fix long have been.. ;..
