Purchased my bike in early 2023 before the elite came out, but it's the heavier duty one - I assume everything should be exactly the same on other models, however..
It's sometimes a bit a challenge when I see something I want to get/build, but I don't know exactly what they are, so maybe this will help someone in the future if they want to put a Rohloff on).
I read a ton about all the different parts and was super nervous about dropping the money on one without seeing another Haul-A-Day with one. It is fantastic. You can see how i routed the cable to adjust if I ever extend wheelbase. Also, I have a Rolling Jackass which is great for kids. In case anyone wants a parts list:
- Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 TS DB* (Art. #8060 Silver / #8061 Red / #8062 Black) - I got the red one
- Standard Axleplate TS (8233)
- Torque Arm (8230)
- Torque arm Screws with washers (8231)
- Torque arm clamp TS (8241)
- Tandem shifter cable set (8267) - as you can see I used different housing because I didn't like black.
- Rohloff 4-Bolt Brake Rotor (160mm, rohloff version. I actually mistakenly thought a PM bone would work for torque, so I bought a 180mm rotor-- the PM bone is only compatible woth QR hub and I have the threaded). I kept the PM bone as a bake riser for 180mm rotors)
- Front Chainring: I got an absolute black oval ring 53t/130mm
- Rohloff Chain Tensioner** (Art. #8250) - needed..the spring mechanism is very robust.
- Chain Guide: (Art# 8290) I didnt use - i have a thick 1 speed eboke chain that stays solid. I'm going to get a wooden chainguard, however. In general, woth normal chains you should get one. Part number is 8290. It is too narow for my chain and ultimately not needed. I did find a mountain bike one that can handle wide chains if needed (I forget the part), but I did not purchase.
- Chain: I used a KMC 1 speed ebike chain (need two.. I forget how many links, I think 167)
Pre-conversion gear range: 22.0-80.0" with 55/39T up front with 11-34 rear cassette. (also BOTH of my Microshift shift levels ended up breaking after ~2 years)
Post-conversion gear range: 18.5-97.2" with Stock Rohloff 16T cog, 53T oval front ring. Also shifts easily under loads. Climbing hills with school age children is not a problem (human leg motor only). Rohloff has reputation for durability. Fewer moving external parts. My chain is also very robust and should last a long time (also less wear because it is not changing cogs externally). Gear ratio is 3.31, well above the minimum gear ratio required by Rohloff for safety (2.50).
Note- instead of the torque arm and components (torque arm screws, clamp) you can instead get the QR hub version ('CC Hub), you need a PM Bone and PM Axleplate (I confirmed these work on the frame) -- this is more convenient for taking the wheel on and off, but less robust for the torque forces with large loads (perhaps slightly elevated risk of rear wheel coming out while riding - may be more moderate risk, but im unsure). Since this is a cargo bike and I wanted this to be as robust as possible I went with the threaded hub. All Rohloff components came from
(part numbers will pull them up). KMC chain came from KMC, Chain ring and Ergon grips were purchased from Amazon.
