On a flat pedal, like the Promenade (where your shoe can get in and hit the collar), I'd say the retaining clip is required. On a pedal like the US-S (where your shoe is constrained by the cleat), I'd not worry about it.
I'll wait out for something on the Allways..would be nice to have sealed bearings too!The MKS pretzel also looks like it could have a good grip.
The Allways is available natively with the Ezy Superior quick
release system. So if you haven't already invested in Ezy, just
get the Allways and be done.
If you have a reason to prefer Ezy (to Ezy Superior), the Pretzel
has a cup and cone spindle, as does the Promenade. I suspect you
can buy an Ezy Promenade and a Standard Pretzel, and swap the
spindles. This would give you a standard Promenade, and an Ezy
Pretzel.
