Hi,

Anyone familiar with the sizing and features can help me out with info on vintage BF? Specifically, what are the measurements, small vs. large, on circa 2000 Non-custom BF Pocket Nomad and Metro.  Wayback Machine did not help.

I have a circa 2000 Pocket Nomad, which I believe is a small. The ctr to center from seatpost to stem is 52 cm (MOL).

There is a person in my area (but too far for me to see it in person yet) selling a similar vintage BF Metro 7, he thinks it's a large but says the ctr to ctr seatpost to stem is 53 cm. I am kind of interested b/c I think a large would fit me a bit better(without an extra long stem). If it's actually the same or nearly the same size I'll probably hold off.

I believe both frames are identical in features, they just came with different parts. The nomad is 3x7 gearing and the Metro is 1x7. This Metro even has the extra cable stop for the Dual Drive hub.

THANKS!

The two models were essentially stock versions of the New World Tourist, albeit with some subtle differences (most notably a 1.125" headset rather than a 1.25").

The Metro was a 7 speed and the Nomad was a 3x7. They were to be offered in basic colors only (Flag Red, Ink Black, Cream Soda Blue, Green Gear Green). They were offered in 3 sizes, with effective top tube lengths of 50, 56, and 60cm.

However, we occasionally made custom versions, so you might find some variance on any of those points. As it relates to sizing, for most of our history we have offered 8 different mainframe sizes, all even numbers, from 48 to 62cm.

Hang on. Are you saying there was a period of time when the New World Tourist used a 1.25-inch headset?!

The only Bike Friday's I've seen (in my admittedly limited exposure) with 1.25" headsets have been Llamas. And all New World Tourists I've seen have had 1.125" headsets. Can you give us approximate years when those 1.25" NWTs would have been produced?

I have a 1994 Pocket rocket with the 1.25” headset. It came with a YST brand that did not last. I replaced it with a Shimano XT, now lo longer made, and it’s still good.

I purchased a NWT for my wife that had the same 1.25” headset. Now sold.

So, 1.25” headsets seem to have been used initially in most models, perhaps thinking it would be more stable with the extremely long stem.

I'm not certain, but I think 2020 was the last year. At that point, they were using threadless 1.25", which had been the case since about 2013. Before that, nearly everything was threaded 1.25".

Thanks! Excellent info.  It sounds like his bike is probably the same size as mine. I will probably let this one get away.

Ha! I’ve been lusting after one for years! I even test ride a bike in Eugene in 1998. Someday, hopefully soon!

You were right, of course, and my memory was wrong. My pocket nomad measures out to 50 cm.

How tall are you? Running straight bars, I assume?

Regarding getting you one made for you, have you considered getting a frame and building it up?

Somehow, all NWTs that I have/had had the 1.25" headset.. Two had a threaded fork setup with a threadless headset and a locking nut, and one had a threadless fork (all from around 2013/2014)
Unfortunately, I had limited options to choose from so I am stuck with this size. But, thankfully, headsets last forever; else  it is painful to find a replacement in this size (at least one that is not super expensive)..

The other, also not cheap, option is to get a 1/1.25" fork and a headtube reducer....

I'm not disinterested in a frame. Money is always tight, hence my prowling of FBM.

Height prob. about 175 cm? Short legs, long torso. On the road I prefer drop bars. I have a 54 cm gravel bike with a 70 cm stem and it fits me pretty well, I think (although standover is less than desired).
I took the small Pocket Nomad and put a compact gravel bar on it with a 90 cm stem. That was a bit too short so yesterday I bought a 100 cm stem on FBM, installed it and fit seems better.

MTB with a flat bar I have two mediums and with a shorter dropper than stock (those short legs) they seem to work well. Reach about 43.9 cm and horizontal top tube of 59 cm. I don't like those wide bars that are popular so I cut them down to 73 cm or so.

Thanks, Walter and everyone for the input.
