Several people have reached out to me because they've been having trouble unsubscribing, even though I had mentioned it a few times in my last email. So to clarify a little bit:
* We did not subscribe you to the Yak! You subscribed yourself at some point.
* We want you to be able to unsubscribe. In fact, we want you to have total control over it.
* In the recent past, the Yak! was broken. You may have unsubscribed, but it didn't actually work.
* You can now actually unsubscribe with the Yak!
* You can unsubscribe by sending an email /with the address you subscribed with/ to
yak+uns...@bikefriday.com.
* Many people have intermediary addresses. If you are subscribed to one of these, the email you end up receiving them at is NOT the same. To figure this out, read the message headers (more on this below).
* If you do not know which email you subscribed with, you can unsubscribe with all of them.
* The Yak! is a community forum. We also have a newsletter. These are unrelated. If you unsubscribed from the newsletter, it does not unsubscribe you from the Yak!
This is probably enough for most folks, but if you're frustrated, the most likely reason for frustration is an intermediary address. To figure out this, you have to look at the whole raw email. This is often referred to as the message source. I know, for example, that in Thunderbird, you can hold down the Control key while hitting the U key and it will open it. Look at the "Received: from" headers. There's a whole stack of them, more or less together. The chronologically most recent ones will be at the top. The oldest ones are at the bottom. There's going to be a bunch of information that's meaningless to most people, but if you look for something like "for <so...@email.address>" you'll be able to track down the intermediary. You'll see a "for <
y...@bikefriday.com>" in there near the bottom, you'll see the final destination near the top, and in between, you'll see any intermediary address.
If you got all that and you're still having problems, feel free to contact me directly with all of your email addresses and I will search the member list. So far, though, out of all the people that have contacted me about this, none of have had any meaningful portion of their email address included in the member listing. I hope that this helps those and others in similar situations.
