sorry John,
for some reason I did not receive or see this followup note of yours.
No secrets here.
Bike Friday was terrific in their patience with me.
in the end I sent 3 frames (2 x PR and 1 x Tikit) down for repaints.
Plus two swan/curved stem risers to be replaced with straight stem risers.
I had already stripped all three frames down to just the frame. all
parts (BB, HS, everything) removed.
Yes, one post of the fixing point where the Ears slot in, on one PR
frame (this one we are talking about) was completely sheared off. They
replaced it.
I had managed to press out a pivot pin that was supposed to rotate
freely (but which was completely seized up - which is why the frame is
all blackened - we had to apply some serious heat to it before it would
press out)
photos attached.
I don't know if they did any other mods. I don't think so. I think I
have the original Ears.
I reassembled the bike myself once the frames came back.
a standard Paint job was $325.
a fancier paint choice was $375 (I had my tikit repainted grape soda
purple.)
which, while more expensive than it was 8 or so years ago (when it was
about $140) is still very reasonable in the big scheme of bicycle paint
work.
there are were small charges ($60) for each of the steps they needed to
do beyond the paint work. very reasonable.
My invoices are attached.
Let me know any other questions.
Peter
Now that the weight question has been addressed, I'll ask a couple of
follow-up Qs
* Was any overhaul work done on the pivots, by you or Bike Friday? I'm
assuming new pivot pins were installed, but did the 'ears' require
any work?
* Did you send a painted, or plain, pile of parts?
* Did you have Bike Friday perform any modifications to the frame and
fork while it was stripped?
* About how much money was the work? I don't need a precise
accounting, just a general idea . . $100s ? $1,000s ?
