Hi professor,

I hope that you are doing well. The math club will host its last event of the semester in collaboration with the Classic Society on April 16, 2024, and I would appreciate it if you could help us share this information with the CS department.

Date: Tuesday, April 16, 2024

Time: 12:30 pm - 2: 00 pm

Location: Boylan Hall 2405

Speaker: Professor Philip Thibodeau

Title: Measuring the Earth with Eratosthenes of Cyrene

Abstract: The first scientific estimate of the size of the earth was made by the Greek scholar Eratosthenes of Cyrene. How did he make his calculations? And how did he manage to get so close to the correct answer? This lecture will answer those questions, in addition to relating Eratosthenes' project to his other achievements as a geographer, geometer, mathematician, and poet.

Thank you for your help and support.

Best,

Lise Augustin
