Hello Everyone,

As many of you have heard, the bluegrass community lost one of its shining lights last weekend when Gabe Hirshfeld passed away at the age of 36. The family announced the initial memorial gathering will be held this Sunday, January 4th, at 1 pm in Needham (details copied below). Here is an important update about this Sunday:

After the gathering in Needham on Sunday, everyone is invited to meet up at the Sheraton in Framingham. Starting at 4 pm, we'll be able to use the entire Lower Level for the rest of the night. Non-musicians are welcome to come and experience some of the music and community that Gabe loved so much.

The hotel has been recently renovated, and the new restaurant will be open until 10 pm. Those wishing to stay at the hotel on Saturday or Sunday can save 15% with this link:

Please see below for details about the memorial beforehand in Needham.

This is Gabe’s brother, Josh. With unbelievable sadness, I am sharing that Gabe passed away unexpectedly this past weekend.

Over the last few days, our family has been truly moved by the outpouring of messages and stories from the music community – a *little* bit about his banjo virtuosity, but mostly about his generosity, sense of humor, and loyalty to his friends, of which he had so many around the world.

To the many who want to celebrate Gabe’s life together, we’ll be gathering this Sunday:

When: Sunday, January 4, at 1:00 PM

Where: Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Ave, Needham, MA 02494

Livestream: A link will be posted here as soon as it is finalized.

We know that disseminating information on short notice like this is a challenge. Please reach out to anyone you know who isn't on social media to help us make sure they’re informed about this Sunday’s service.

What’s next? We’ll share details soon for a larger musical remembrance in February to allow more time for Gabe’s musical family traveling from afar to gather and play together. We also look forward to announcing a memorial fund in Gabe’s honor shortly.

Thank you for the love you’ve shown him. Please continue to send your stories and photos to memoriesofg...@gmail.com
