Hey Everybody,

The 8 pm Feature Band next Tuesday, September 17th will be Laura Orshaw & The New Velvet Band. GRAMMY-nominated fiddler and vocalist Laura Orshaw has toured with Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, and her current band, The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys. In 2020, Laura won her first two IBMA Awards, and in 2019, SPBGMA named Laura the Fiddle Performer of the Year, making her the first woman to win that award. Laura will be joined by Ben Pearce (mandolin), G Rockwell (banjo), Josh Dayton (bass), and yours truly (Tony Watt) on guitar.

A special combination of Berklee's Women and Non-Binary People in Roots ensembles taught by Laura Orshaw will be playing the 7 pm Opening Set immediately beforehand. Last year, Laura won the Eisenson Family Prize for American Roots Music, which allowed her to work with an incredibly talented group focusing on women and non-binary musicians in bluegrass, country, and Old-Time music. Later this month, many of these same students will be showcasing at the IBMA World of Bluegrass in Raleigh, NC. Please come cheer along these incredibly talented young people as they warm up for their big trip!

And as always, Bluegrass Tuesdays features some of the best bluegrass jamming around all night long. Steve and Eric’s Third Set Jam gets started around 9:15, and folks are usually jamming at the other end of the restaurant and elsewhere, before and long after that.

About Bluegrass Tuesdays at Lily P’s

Bluegrass Tuesdays began in Central Square in Cambridge in September of 1993 and has since grown to host regional and national artists on stage and serve as a weekly gathering place for the local bluegrass community. For 27 years, Tuesday Night Bluegrass at The Cantab Lounge was hosted by Geoff Bartley, about whom reviewer Nate Dow wrote, “If Massachusetts were ever to appoint a Folk Laureate, the honor would have to go to the one and only Geoff Bartley." Geoff welcomed nationally-known bluegrass artists to the stage such as Dale Ann Bradley, Tony Trischka, Darol Anger, David Grier, Missy Raines, Jim Hurst, Chris Jones, Molly Tuttle, and the late James King. Bluegrass Tuesdays have also been a place where many bluegrass musicians have met and “cut their teeth”, including members of The Infamous Stringdusters, Crooked Still, Della Mae, The Gibson Brothers, The Steep Canyon Rangers, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, The Po' Ramblin' Boys, Mile Twelve, and Joy Kills Sorrow. Bluegrass Tuesdays are now hosted by Tony Watt and held at chef Chris Parsons' restaurant Lily P's Fried Chicken & Oysters in Kendall Square in Cambridge.

About the Free Garage Parking at Lily P’s
Lily P's is located at 50 Binney Street in Cambridge, MA 02142. Here’s some important info about the free garage parking directly beneath the restaurant:

— the entrance to the parking garage is located at the corner of Linskey Way and First Street

— you can plug in 1 Linskey Way, Cambridge, MA 02142 into your GPS, but the entrance to the parking garage is half a block toward First St. (and the Charles River)

— the garage is located directly underneath Lily P's, and the entrance has a big green LED sign with hundreds of parking spaces available

— the garage door (on the right, directly next to the sign with the green LEDs) is usually closed, but if you pull up to it all the way, it will open automatically

— Lily P's is offering validated parking to everyone who attends, no purchase required

Hey Everyone,

The 8 pm Feature Band next Tuesday, October 1st will be Greg Liszt & Friends! Greg co-founded arguably the most important band to ever emerge from the Boston-area traditional music scene, Crooked Still, which got their start on our stage over 20 years ago. He went on to tour with one of the most iconic stars in American history, Bruce Springsteen, before founding his own band, The Deadly Gentlemen. Greg will be joined by a cadre of stars in their own rights: Celia Woodsmith (guitar, Della Mae), Zachariah Hickman (bass, Josh Ritter, Ray LaMontagne, etc.), and Kathleen Parks (fiddle, Twisted Pine).

JB & His Friends will be playing the 7 pm Opening Set immediately beforehand. JB Cardineau was raised in the French Alps and in the Wild West of the USA (Austin, Texas), playing guitar until moving to Montreal, Quebec where he picked up his grandmother’s 200-year-old mandolin in 2017. After spending several years as a pillar of the Montreal roots scene, he moved to Boston in 2022 and now attends Berklee College of Music and is on a mission to reclaim the polycultural quintessence of roots music and unleash the heavy grass-picking artillery. JB (on mandolin) will be joined by Sophie Wellington (guitar), Max Wareham (banjo), and Emma Turoff (bass).

And as always, Bluegrass Tuesdays features some of the best bluegrass jamming around all night long. Steve and Eric’s Third Set Jam gets started around 9:15, and folks are usually jamming at the other end of the restaurant and elsewhere, before and long after that.

Hey Everyone,

The 8 pm Feature Band next Tuesday, October 8th will be Splendid Torch (formerly known as Mamma's Marmalade). Massachusetts-based trio Splendid Torch dwells in spontaneity and synthesis, conjuring an unexpectedly broad sound from just three musicians. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists Lily Sexton (fiddle, guitar), Sean Davis (guitars), and Josh Ballard (bass, clawhammer banjo), Splendid Torch calls on textured lyricism, collective rhythmic feel, and poignant vocal performances that evoke their varied influences, ranging from George Harrison to Emmylou Harris, The Band to John Hartford.

Clay Pigeons will be playing the 7 pm Opening Set immediately beforehand. Clay Pigeons' members have navigated the waters of the New England music scene for many years. The band consists of Conor Hennessy (guitar), Paul Simion (fiddle, accordion), Luke Hanlin (mandolin), and Ryan Fess (bass). Clay Pigeons’ music tells the authentic and irreverent stories of the places and people of coastal Massachusetts and Boston. The group’s vibrant songwriting, harmony work, and rollicking style bring a pinch of New England saltiness and a boatload of fun to folk, bluegrass, ragtime, and Americana.

Hey Everyone,

A month and a half ago, we had our biggest Tuesday ever, and part of that night was the announcement of our new weekly night of traditional music at Lily P's every Thursday called Old-Time Almost Fridays! Well, now we're celebrating our biggest WEEK ever including tonight's Launch Party with arguably the most important Old-Time musician of his generation: Bruce Molsky!

Bruce Molsky's performance at Lily P's starts TONIGHT at 7 pm (please note the earlier start time), and is followed immediately at 8 pm by an advanced-level Old-Time jam led by Bruce himself. Also at 8 pm, at the opposite end of the restaurant, there will be a Beginner/Intermediate level Old-Time jam led by Cathy Mason and Chris Reckling. The "unofficial" jam schedule is much more free-flowing, with jamming hopefully lasting late into the night (or early morning!). Please check out the Old-Time Almost Fridays webpage (https://bluegrasstuesdays.com/old-time.html) for more details and upcoming artists.

Then, please come back to Lily P's this Sunday, October 20th for a very special performance by the Rick Faris Band presented in conjunction with the Boston Bluegrass Union! Rick Faris played with Special Consensus for 11 years before starting his own band, and since leaving won IBMA's New Artist of the Year award in 2022 and IBMA's Songwriter of the Year award just last month.

The Rick Faris Band's performance at Lily P's on Sunday starts at 7 pm (please note the earlier start time), and goes until 9 pm. Just like Bluegrass Tuesdays, it’s going to be a ‘Pass-the-Boot’ show with no cover charge, but unlike Bluegrass Tuesdays, Lily P’s will not be open late for jamming that night. The kitchen will be open from 4 until 9 pm on Sunday, so please come early to grab a good seat and join us for dinner!

Then the 8 pm Feature Band next Tuesday, October 22nd will be Thunder & Rain all the way from Nashville! Thunder and Rain's award-winning songwriting, three-part harmony,  and sing-along choruses support image-rich lyricism and thunderous banjo and fiddle drive. They’ve recorded three studio albums, toured the US, Canada, Ireland, and the UK, and the band’s bluegrass take on popular songs on YouTube have amassed hundreds of thousands of views. Erinn Peet Lukes (on guitar) is joined by Amelia Ransom (fiddle), Laura Ray (banjo), and local guest star Chris Sartori (of Twisted Pine) on bass.

Taylor Ackley & Friends will be playing the 7 pm Opening Set immediately beforehand. Taylor is a scholar, composer, and performer of American Roots music, and more recently, a regular at Bluegrass Tuesdays at Lily P's! Taylor is also an Assistant Professor of Music at Brandeis University in Waltham where he teaches various classes on roots music. Taylor will be joined by his wife Alison Ackley (cello), James Heazlewood-Dale (bass), and me (Tony Watt) on guitar.

And as always, Bluegrass Tuesdays features some of the best bluegrass jamming around all night long. Steve and Eric’s Third Set Jam gets started around 9:15, and folks are usually jamming at the other end of the restaurant and elsewhere, before and long after that.

As a reminder, on Tuesday, October 29th, we will have no bands on stage (but jamming is still available); if you'd like to see a performance that evening, please come see Country Music: Black Roots and Branches at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston (tickets are $25 or less)!

The 8 pm Feature Band next Tuesday, November 19th will be The Hosmer Mountain Boys with Special Guest Silas Powell. The Hosmer Mountain Boys made a huge splash when they played Bluegrass Tuesdays earlier this year, and we are so excited to have them back! They are truly in a class by themselves when it comes to young bands playing old-school, traditional bluegrass in the Northeast. They were voted the “Fan Favorite” at the 2023 Podunk Bluegrass Festival and performed on WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour this past year in Lexington, KY. Keegan Day (guitar) and Simon Brogie (banjo) front the band along with Cathy Bumgarner Day (fiddle) and Tom Bowman (bass). They will joined by West Virginia mandolin phenom, Silas Powell, who elevates their sound to a whole 'nother level. This promises to be a great show for lovers of traditional bluegrass!

Emma Turoff & Friends will be playing the 7 pm Opening Set immediately beforehand. Well-known mandolin and bass player and current Berklee student, Emma Turoff, will be leading the Opening Set band on November 19th. Emma will be joined by some of the most talented young women in the area including Dakota Smith (guitar), Sammy Blackmore (mandolin), and Annie McDougall (fiddle) collectively known by their band name All She Wrote, as well as Gretchen Bowder on banjo!

And as always, Bluegrass Tuesdays features some of the best bluegrass jamming around all night long. Steve and Eric’s Third Set Jam gets started around 9:15, and folks are usually jamming at the other end of the restaurant and elsewhere, before and long after that.

Please check out these amazing bands coming to Lily P's soon:

Hey Everyone,

I hope everyone is having a happy and healthy holiday weekend! The 8 pm Feature Band next Tuesday, December 3rd will be Ethan Setiawan & Fine Ground. Ethan Setiawan & Fine Ground is visually a bluegrass band, born of a yearning to return to bluegrass roots and imbued with original tunes and quality songwriting. Ethan Setiawan has won both the National Mandolin Championship and the RockyGrass Mandolin Championship. In creating Fine Ground, Ethan called on some of his favorite musicians in the Northeastern bluegrass community: BB Bowness on banjo, Julian Pinelli on fiddle, Alex Rubin on guitar, and Brittany Karlson on bass. The band gets at the heart of bluegrass while simultaneously infusing it with their own disparate musical influences.

Deviant Folk will be playing the 7 pm Opening Set immediately beforehand. Deviant Folk’s Mark Abruzzese writes songs that celebrate the joy of a simple life rooted in music. His composition and performance echoes diverse influences like Tom Petty, John Prine, James Brown, Pearl Jam, the Beastie Boys, and Billy Strings. The 8 pm Feature Band next Tuesday, December 10th will be True Life Bluegrass, a band that has performed on Tuesday bluegrass nights in Cambridge earlier and more often than any other group still going. Like a number of Boston-area bands, True Life Bluegrass got its start at an event honoring Joe Val. In fact, their debut performance was at the very first event ever held to honor and support Joe, a fundraiser held shortly before he passed away in 1985. The core of the original band (Ellen Hays on guitar, Steve Watt on banjo and mandolin, and Eric Levenson on bass) has been together ever since. The band is rounded out by Steve's sons David on Dobro and me (Tony Watt) on mandolin and guitar, along with Julie Metcalf on fiddle.

Immediately beforehand, at 7 pm, there will be two new Berklee Bluegrass Ensembles taught by me (Tony Watt). The first ensemble consists of Linda Z (fiddle and mandolin), Soraya Sullivan (guitar), Sam Thomas (cello), Ryan Mean (Dobro), and me on bass. The second ensemble features Kaia Greene (vocals), Hayden Reidling (guitar), Quinn Eastburn (mandolin), Nico Welsh (guitar), Micah Philipp (banjo), and me on bass. These will be exciting debut performances by talented young musicians that you won't want to miss!

Hey Everyone,

The 8 pm Feature Band next Tuesday, January 7th will be The Spring Hill Rounders. Hailing from across the country - Neil Helme (bass) is originally from Baltimore, David Rizzuti (guitar) is from the Bronx, and Danny Erker (mandolin) is from St. Louis - they now all make their homes in the Greater Boston area, and have named their band after "the ridge in the central part of Somerville, and the residential neighborhood that sits atop it" (Wikipedia). The band describes themselves as a country-rock band in a bluegrass body.

Stoneface Mountain will be playing the 7 pm Opening Set immediately beforehand. Stoneface Mountain is a young and upcoming bluegrass band from the Boston area, known for their energetic and compelling sound. Their combination of sibling harmonies together with spirited instrumentals create a unique sound that keeps audiences enthralled. Stoneface Mountain features two pairs of siblings: Audrey (mandolin & fiddle) and Megan (banjo) Mendenhall, and Ellie (lead vocals) and Mary (guitar) Strano.

And as always, Bluegrass Tuesdays features some of the best bluegrass jamming around all night long. Steve and Eric’s Third Set Jam gets started around 9:15, and folks are usually jamming at the other end of the restaurant and elsewhere, before and long after that.
