The debate performance was bad. But I also think it's something that could be coachable. I'm a little surprised that he came across the way that he did because part of the problem was he was speaking way way too fast. He had a ton of stuff in his head that you could tell he wanted to get out and he was speaking way too fast and maybe was over prepped on substance but under prepped on style.
As someone who used to do speech and debate and even helped coach teams way back when, I really think he needs someone to work with him really closely and maybe do a debate part too. I also think the debate probably shouldn't be at night. I don't know if that played a role but I think it might have.
But anyway, back to the style part. For one he needs to slow down. He needs the word slow all over the place. If he's allowed anything on the podium. He just needs cards that say slow, slow, slow, slow. He needs to channel his inner Obama and talk a whole lot slower. Next he needs themes. He needs phrases that are catch phrases that are relevant to the themes of his presidency and his campaign and he needs to repeat them over and over in almost every question. So the economy, tie it to the theme. Immigration, tie it to the theme. Democracy, tie it to the theme.
And he needs to own his accomplishments more. And as Patty pointed out that Democrats need to own his accomplishments more. He's actually done a lot for a President that's had so much obstruction trying to prevent him from doing anything. Whether that's him or string pullers I honestly don't care. He's getting it done. I mean Reagan probably had a bunch of string pullers at the end and the Republicans still rally behind him.
I mean I don't know of any other Americans have experienced this, but with infrastructure money my street doesn't have a pothole in it anymore. Oakland is not doing particularly well financially, but we got money from the federal government for infrastructure and guess what they used it. So my roads are better.
My student loans, it isn't even about forgiveness. I actually have an accurate statement that shows all my payments and shows them applied correctly. It actually shows my progress towards loan forgiveness and I'm not being penalized because I didn't move over to some processor. I didn't even know I was supposed to be with in order to get loan forgiveness for doing public interest work. Even if you don't believe in broader loan forgiveness, there are a ton of Americans who make career choices with the understanding that if they did public interest for 10 years they would no longer oh money on their student loans. And some of this making the choice to do public service or public interest work are making substantially less than we could make in the private market to help other individuals. At this point it's a contract, but it's a contract that I think the Republicans would undo if they could, or rely on small print that nobody could figure out. Or maybe even find, to justify not forgiving the loans of people who made payments for 10 years. Before Biden. Biden hardly anyone had actually had their loans forgiven. Now I have a number of co-workers who actually have seen their loans go away and I'm only a few years from it.
Inflation actually started when Trump was in office and Biden needs to go there. Biden needs to share that fact. Inflation is also global right now, not just in the United States. It was in part fueled by supply and demand issues during covid, in this country, it's also in part fueled by all the subsidies that happened during covid. But there's an argument that our economy would be much worse if those subsidies hadn't happened, and to some degree. Trump does get credit for that. So how to go there needs to be tred carefully. But it is an inherited problem.
I do have a hard time with the strong economy argument maybe because I'm one of the ones who isn't feeling it. Personally, I'm feeling more of the inflation. My wages have not kept up. I'm not in the tech industry. And quite honestly, my field is facing layoffs right now. There are other Americans who are very underemployed. So maybe the unemployment rate is low but they're making less than they? Otherwise could. There's even a wage drop happening in tech right now, which might be a correction, but still the people who are impacted are going to be feeling that. It will feel like gaslighting too many Americans if you say that the economy is completely hunky-dory. So I think you need to show empathy for the pain that some Americans are feeling, because there are Americans who are feeling way more pain than I'm feeling, I work with those individuals everyday. But Biden can also chew his horn on what he has done. The infrastructure act is huge.
And I think it's okay to point to his leadership skills. He has built a team. He has built an executive team to run the country that is doing a good job. And he brings stability. His team stays with him. Trump won't listen to anyone else and won't accept feedback from others. If someone disagrees with him, they're gone. He had no stability in his executive team. That kind of chaos in the executive branch is not going to be helpful to this country. He wants a yes man who will tell him. He's right. Even when he isn't. Like call Trump out for all that.
Admittedly, I would not be upset if mine were replaced by someone else. When I watched the debate I became super sad and anxious because in my mind, if someone isn't really educated on the issues. Trump just won.
But I did read something today that calls that into question. There was at least one poll where folks said they were more likely to vote for Biden after the debate. What the media heads and Democrats aren't doing is focusing on all the ammo Trump gave them during the debate. Trump owned things that are not popular. Trump did the same kind of wishy-washy wobbling that he did in the last election about whether he would accept the results of an election. Trump even owned up to the fact that he fires people when they call him out. He is basically a tyrant and there shouldn't be any mincing of words about that. American can make the choice to vote for a tyrant, but they should know that that's what they're voting for.
In an ideal world we would have a different candidate, but we don't. But the entire Democratic party and Biden need lessons and rhetoric right now. They need to learn how to be effective as speakers and in pushing their platform and their campaign. And Patti is 100% right. Those doubts should not be expressed in public right now. It's a little too late for that. Especially given the choice that we have in this next election.
Anyway, Democratic speech and debate coaches of America need to get over to Biden and start prepping him for the rest of his campaign. I think that could go a long way. And they should probably be prepping other Democrats as well.
