Dear Bay Region Dual Enrollment Leaders,

It was so wonderful to see you all today! If you missed the meeting, check out the agenda or the recording. Today we focused on what we hope to accomplish this year, thinking about these questions:

  1. What can this group do to support you?

  2. What do you want to learn this year?

  3. What are your dual enrollment challenges? What problems are you trying to solve?

  4. What regional issues should we focus on to create collaborative solutions?

TO DO: If you missed the meeting, you can still add your thoughts or support for the ideas we discussed on the Jamboard!

Two announcements:

  • Thinking about writing a CTIEG ro K12 SWP grant? Grant Workshop Recordings & Resources from the grant writing workshop hosted by the K14 Pathways Regional Joint Venture, a project of the Strong Workforce Program, the Bay Area Community College Consortium (BACCC), and the South Central Coast Regional Consortium (SCCRC)

  • AB 102 has passed! Allows CCAP with COE and specifies that “high school,” for purposes of a CCAP partnership, includes a community school, juvenile court school, or adult education program.

Our next meeting is at noon on October 13th. Katheryn Horton from College of Marin will be sharing some great pathway examples!

Let us know if you have any questions.

Hi, Mallory,  we understand how Dual Enrollment works at the college and could you direct us to online resources to help us understand how the courses translate back to the high school?

Essentially, when the college course is complete and the student has earned a grade through Dual Enrollment, the student then takes the college transcript to the high school principal / counselor.

  1. How are the units / credit applied?

  1. Does it have to be a specific grade?

  1. Is there ed code that speaks to this or are these policies determined by each high school district?

  1. I know that colleges there is a form that requires student, parent and school signatures, but prior to that a course has to be identified and once the course is completed how does it translate on the high school side.

1 College course = 1 year of high school

Thanks,

Hi Monica,

Thank you for reaching out! Application of the college courses on the high school side are the purview of the high school This is typically set out in board policy, but I can give you some guidelines.

  1. How are the units / credit applied? Typically, 1 college unit translates to 3.33 high school credits. So a 3 unit course (which translates to 3 class hours per week for a 16 week term) is the equivalent of a 1 year high school course (10 credits). Some science and language courses have higher units and require more class time. In some cases high schools limit any college course of 3 units or more to 10 credits total. In some cases all units are transcribed as high school credits. The high school decides.

  1. Does it have to be a specific grade? The college transcript will have a course grade. Typically it is transcribed. When students apply to UC or CSU, they will need to list these courses as college courses.

  1. Is there ed code that speaks to this or are these policies determined by each high school district? This is determined by each high school district. Ed Code 488000 says " The intent of this section is to provide educational enrichment opportunities for a limited number of eligible pupils, rather than to reduce current course requirements of elementary and secondary schools, and also to help ensure a smoother transition from high school to college for pupils by providing them with greater exposure to the collegiate atmosphere. " Board policy says that dual enrollment will only be approved for classes that are not offered by the high school. This is generally, which means that courses where the equivalent doesn't fit into a high school students schedule might be approved or summer classes in a district that doesn't offer a course for summer school might be approved. Again, it is up to the high schools to define their policies and procedures.

  1. I know that colleges there is a form that requires student, parent and school signatures, but prior to that a course has to be identified and once the course is completed how does it translate on the high school side. The process varies by college. Some colleges and high schools (particularly under CCAP) will have a data sharing agreement and will provide the school with course and grade information for participating students. For individual (concurrent) dual enrollment, often students are responsible for obtaining an official or unofficial transcript and providing it to their high school.
In a perfect world, high schools would have a list of courses most frequently dual enrolled and how they are posted on student transcripts.

I'd be happy to answer any further questions... Just let me know!

Regards,

Mallory

If schools do a grade bump for AP, the same should apply to dual enrollment.  It is a local decision.

Thank you so much Mallory and Monica for the information,

I have another question:

When a student gets a B grade at one of the dual enrollment courses , does the school take that as a B on the school transcript or it is boosted up to A?

I attended the dual Enrollment conference and I noticed that most of the school do that, but not all.

I know it is school decision, but what are your thoughts on that?

We do the grade bump for classes that are UC transferable.  This decision was based on a conversation with UC Doorways.  Before we had that conversation, we did any class that was CSU and UC transferable.
