Elevate Online Dual Enrollment Quality
August 5, 2025 — Chapel Hill, NC — The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) is proud to announce the release of a new publication, Online, On Purpose: A Framework for Building Impactful Dual Enrollment Experiences Through Online College Courses. As the national leader in ensuring quality dual and concurrent enrollment programs, NACEP developed this resource to help educators design and deliver high-impact online dual enrollment opportunities for high school students.
The use of online college courses for high school dual enrollment is common and growing. Research indicates poorly structured courses that lack structures for impactful student engagement and appropriate support can derail student success. Far too often, high school students are handed a login and expected to navigate a new structure for learning without support, putting both their academic confidence and future aspirations at risk. NACEP’s new framework helps address a critical gap in guidance for programs, ensuring that these courses are not only accessible but impactful.
“Dual enrollment is often a student’s first experience with college. Programs typically have one chance to ensure that first touch with higher education is an impactful one.” said Amy Williams, Executive Director of NACEP and the report’s author. “Online, On Purpose provides a clear roadmap for institutions and school districts to work together and build online dual enrollment experiences that are rigorous, equitable, and rooted in student success.”
The framework breaks down five essential elements to ensure a rigorous and supported student experience.
Provider: Work with legitimate higher education institutions to improve credit transfer and academic integrity.
Partnership: Establish clearly defined roles and responsibilities between K–12 and higher education partners.
- Model: Choose instructional delivery models that align with student needs, district and institution resources.
- Support: Provide academic and non-academic support to help students stay engaged and succeed.
Engagement: Build consistent, collaborative communications and provide onboarding for both students and their families.
Drawing from national program quality standards, institutional best practices, and contributions from programs across the country, Online, On Purpose is a practical guide to ensuring impactful online college course experiences for high school students.
